Loren - how much "time" must elapse between "trips"? Does the engine need to cool off or can you just shut down and then restart a new "trip" right away?

I have been following this thread with much interest, as my codes (same 5 as listed above) weren't setting. for the past 2 weeks, I have been trying to execute the drive cycle as listed above, 2-3 minutes under 40 then 15 minutes under 60.
SUCCESS this AM! All my monitors are OK.
I think the difference is the part keeping it under 60, which is really difficult to do particularly on the fwy that I drive in the AM, where normal flow is around 80. I only drive the 993 to work 2-3 times a week, but I tried the cycle last week, both to and from work, and the monitors did not set. I drove to work on Monday, not keeping it under 60. This AM I tried the drive cycle, and then idled in the parking lot, while I got my Actron 9180 out and plugged it in...This is the first time since I bought the Actron that I have seen all 8 monitors set.
In response to the time between tests, since I don't drive the car all that often, it was a couple days between cycles for me.
Maybe being at the Red Car last night in the presence of some many other nice 993s, brought some karma. in any case, it took a while, but the drive cycle [finally] worked for me.

what a pain!
I gave up 2 years ago, but previously, I did 3 drive cycles to the letter and then someone told me for the tank venting to pass you need to stay below 3/4 and above 1/4 tank. so I did the cycles again and still no good.
seems the answer is loren's advice about finding someone with a PST2 to determine exactly which test is causing the failure.
no indy in my area has one, local dealer said they can fix it by driving around with the hammer but couldn't give me a hard cost estimate. just an hourly rate to drive around until the flags set, minimum 3 hours, no max.
I wonder why the standard scanners won't give us the same info as the PST2?

Yes. I'm fortunate that the roads around me are darn near perfect for running the BMW sequence. You wouldn't need to run it from your house though and I think there's even less need to end the run at your home. If you can complete the run and end at a shopping center and do the final 5 min idle there, fine. I would shut the car off (not even sure that would be needed) and drive home, let it cool and rerun the same pattern. If the scanner is attached it will tell you right away when everything sets.

Apple woes EXACTLY the same thing with their iPod cables. They charge $50 for their AV cable. Previously all they did was swap on of the audio channels with the video, so you COULD use a standard cable, but now they have a chip that activates the video out, so you HAVE to buy their cable with the proprietary chip in it. A regular AV cable is something like $8 at an electronics store.

"Does it follow cycle flag 1 through 6 or in a different order? say 3, 4, 1, 2 etc."
When I setup (via Porsche tester) a 993 for readiness codes/monitors, I:
1. manually run the SAI test,
2. manually run the Tank Venting test,
3. begin driving,
4. next the O2 sensors get set ~ 15 minutes,
5. next the CAT efficiency gets set another 10 minutes,
6. finally the Adaptation (TRA & FRA) then set, ~ 5 - 10 minutes
Once the above all (6) complete, trip #1 has completed.
Then shut-off and restart the engine and begin trip #2 (repeat steps 1-6).
Again, one of the above steps may be problematic and not set a CEL.

"If not could you PM me with the exact steps needed for me to try once again(in laymans terms)."
The steps have been outlined in detail in this thread. The key to completing
the process successfully in some cases is via use of the Porsche tester,
i.e. knowing what's occurring or NOT occurring during the driving process.
"how much "time" must elapse between "trips"? Does the engine need to cool off or can you just shut down and then restart a new "trip" right away?"
The engine can be shut down and re-started immediately upon completion
of a trip if one uses the tester, otherwise one must wait until the engine
cools so that the SAI test can be performed for the next trip.
"I'm wondering if the reason you're able to drive the 2nd sequence so quickly is because you're running the first 2 tests manually."
That's correct.
"I am guessing that Porsche installed proprietary software that ONLY their reader can decipher,"
Yes and what Porsche has was not defined nor required as part of the OBDII specification.
Also, Porsche most likely used that unique software when developing the 993 OBDII software to
facilitate the process. Porsche's software is copyright protected and for one to develop
other software to read the 993 DME ECM for the key data is not worth the development
cost for tester makers. Remember, the OBDII specification is generic for all vehicles,
but all vehicles are not limited on how extensive an OEM's diagnostic software can be
beyond OBDII.

I also have heard, Loren can correct me here, but the Porsche tester, unlike the Actron and Durametric scanners, can manually reset the Oxygen Sensor monitors.
#69
"can manually reset the Oxygen Sensor monitors."
That like all monitors can easily be reset by disconnecting the battery or
using a generic scanner and pressing the CEL clear/reset function.
The O2 monitor can only be set by driving as is the case for setting the
other ones, i.e. adaptation, CAT.

SUCCESS! I took a long drive tonight about 52 miles through town stop and go and then over to the Casino to drop off the wife kept it under 3000 rpm and no more than 58 mph the whole way an low and behold when I got home and plugged in the Innova OBD II reader I got a "green light!" with all monitors set. I increased the duration of time to 35 minutes for the 40 - 60 mph than those posted in the BMW drive cycle. I was lucky and traffic was light with perfect conditions. I believe this was a conserted effort by everyone who partook in this thread especially Loren who provided answers to most of our questions. Since many of us exhibited the same identical symptoms with the flags and no CEL to keep trying and posting your results back to this thread and especially if your suscessful. Avialibility of a PST2 would make the effort a lot easier since you can see everything in real time. However, don't let that stop you from trying since you may get lucky like I did. Good luck to everyone else. BTW you can find PST2's for sale on "ebay" from time to time from $2K to $3K average.
Cheers!

SUCCESS!!!! As the OP I thought I'd bring this thread full circle. Seams as though I was the last to have the codes clear but I was finally able to make it happen. Thank you to everyone who contributed to those of us who had this problem. My car is now perfect! I love rennlist!
