When the DME relay fails, the car will usually crank but not fire. In my case it was my daughter's 944 and it would work in the morning when cold but fail to start in the afternoon when the car had been run and was hot. They take all of 1 minute to change out the relay so don't fret, just keep a spare with you.

6 years and nearly 80K miles on my 993 and never left me stranded..

I have been meaning to get that belt tool in my onboard tool kit..

7 years and 140K on my 964 and never left me stranded either-
(well, except that time I missed a shift at PIR and over-revved the engine, and an intake valve head broke off and took out the right bank of cylinders.. ) but that was no typical stranding.. that was more like having the entire engine rebuilt by Jeff Gamroth...

Guys, if you do the RS pulley, you don't need the Alt tool. All you need is a small allen key to change belts, plus you only need to carry one belt.

Yup - once - but it wasn't the car's fault...

i've only had her 6 months but just took her to houston, tx (from tulsa,ok) this week and she loved it. NO PROBLEMS. it was about 1000 mile round trip and had more fun driving than flying. i flew my twins and wife down and back...i left early in morning and picked them up at houston bush airport on my way down...then dropped them off at airport before i drove back : ) IT WAS GR8 =) oh, & she got 25 mpg on way down...

Oil cooler blew out on me a couple months ago ... I noticed it before anything untoward happened, but had I been doing 80 on the highway, coulda been bad news ...

I've driven 911s since 1990 and that's the only time a 993 has ever stranded me. I did lose an alternator on a 911SC years ago, and the car died, but I knew it was coming and was trying to get home on luck.

I have'nt had the vehicle long enough. But, when I bought it, I drove from TX to WI without a problem. 1200 miles and one of the best times I've had.

recently broke an alternator belt. Not stranded because I was in town and could make it home. but emphasized to me the importance of changing them. Mine was a low mileage car (36K now) but a 97. At the 30K service they were inspected but suggested to me they didn't need replacing. I would rec. to others to change them. And for thoughts of changing on the road side? forget it. EVEN if you have the tools in the car, in my case there is zero chance I could have done this on the fly. The pulley screws are junk after that much time and would not come out without filing them off. I noticed the replacement allen screws appeared to be a different material and if they hadn't seen 13 years of service it might be a different story. Having the special tool and the belt would at least allow a competent garage to do it which is valuable - especially if it had been the fan belt. I would rec to all owners considering carrying those items (they are not included in the tool kit) and changing belts when you do the big service.

Immoblizer started to act up, but I replaced it before I ever got officially stranded. However, there was this one time my car just shut off by itself. I ran out of gas.

I've had my 993 for 6 years. 3 of which it was a daily driver.

The pulley screws?

You don't need to remove them to replace the alternator belt.

correct. I was just extrapolating to the fan belt breaking that would genuinely strand somebody. I just took the opportunity to replace all the belts when my alternator belt broke.

I am currently in the middle of a 2,500 mile trip and all is well. I really hope I don't have problems because I haven't been, nor will I be, in any area where there will be any competent Porsche mechanics. We left from Vancouver Island and travelled to Jasper, Alberta, down to Banff, Alberta and are now heading over to the Parade in Sun Peaks, BC. Well, starting tomorrow I will be at the Porsche Parade and there will be sufficient knowledge to fix a car but not necessarily the tools to accomplish a job.

Before we left on the trip MikeJ was kind enough to fabricate a tool to change the belts if needed and provide spare belts. Thanks again Mike!!!

The car has been great so far. A great trip for sure.!

I was thinking that I don't remember seeing any photos of your car and looking through your posts, I don't think you ever did post any! Come on!

And yes, technically mine has - a minute out of my sister's driveway the alternator belt failed. On the other hand I did a 2500 mile trip last summer with no issues at all.
