I'm not smarter than you, but I did understand
What I don;t get is why they didn't change the Tach and oil gauge part numbers, they are still 964 in PET.

i suspect the spot for the 4 wheel steering feature warning light position that was intended for the 993 but never implemented due to cost is not on the 964 clock. Then again It never illuminates anyway. Gee it would be nice if one changed to the 964 clock the immobilizer would stop working, wishful thinking. On my VW the immobilizer kicks in for no reason and can't be reset via normal means. I end up detaching the battery and reconnecting it to reset the immobilizer. One can add the immobilizer to the list of automotive things with unintended consequences, the latest being air bags. like a good single malt whisky that seem to become more potent with age, and now unfortunately kill people.
Just a stream of consciousness rant, Hope you found it entertaining.

Nope the ROW catalog only shows two numbers both 993 one for all and one for the Carrera "S", probably has a different face plate color.

I received one today and it's a 964 part number with an immobilizer light. Mystery continues..

In manufacturing and with Porsche supercession to a new part number is not uncommon. For example the 944 part number and the 993 part number for the DME relay seem to be the same part from a functional standpoint. I would suspect this has something to do with making it difficult for the aftermarket supplies to cross to the dealer part number. It may simply be to avoid problems created by tying an older vehicle part to a newer product's set of drawings for product life cycle management reasons. An example the 944 migrates out of current production and some parts associated with its drawings become discontinued by migrating to a new part number a newer in-production vehicle does not inadvertently have its part numbers disappear with the 944.
