Default Gauge needle color

i just got an oil temp/oil level gauge, p/n 993.641.103.02 Sounds like the right part number, the one I pulled out of the car is the same p/n.

What's odd - the new gauge has red needles instead of the orange needles on 993 gauges that I have and also had in the previous 993.

So... what can this be? It's doubtful that someone changed them. Were any 993 known for red needles? And if so, why would the p/n be the same?

If I'm to change to orange needles, where would I get them? Anyone has any dead gauges to share? Or are they available new somewhere?

I think your orange gauges are faded. I noticed the same difference between my 964 C4 and RSA. The RSA spent a lot of time in the sun and the needles were much lighter in comparison.

Since a cab gets a lot more direct sunlight in the cabin than a coupe, that might be the reason.

+1...I've seen this in other cars as well.

I'm not sure if it's fading or it the factory changed the color at some point but I've observed this in various cars. Probably the best way to match them up is to swap the needles from the old unit to the new one. Should be easy to do. There is a speedo gear DIY that might help in opening the gauge here: http://p-car.com/diy/odometer/

As a reference, the needles on my 91 C4 were red, the ones on the 93 RSA were pinkish orange.

I very much wanted to avoid opening the gauges if i could.

Ilko, i don't think that the gauges are faded. They are not pinkish orange, but rather pretty much a carrot orange. And it's kind of unlikely that they would fade the same in every gauge and on all sides? But I'll try to compare them to others, I have three more gauges coming next week.

Mike,
Check the dates on the gauges. Most of these are interchangeable between 964 & 993.

Andreas, this one has a 993 part number, so i assume it's not for 964? I'm sure it'll fit in 964, but i assume it could only have come from a 993 with that part number? If so, why the red needles?

Do you know by chance if I can get orange needles separately somewhere? Or a broken gauge with orange needles? I'd also be curious if fuel/oil gauge has the same size needles as the oil/oil gauge.

PS. Regarding our conversation on illumination... I don;t think you need a switch. Just illuminate all the time I think that makes sense for a wall-plugged unit, no? On an even more unrelated note, I have me one of these I'm thinking of putting in a nice case. But it requires 27V supply I need to find:

No sir, that's a mechanical clock. The 27v is only needed to power an internal heater.

Hmmm... Interesting. I didn;t even think of that, thought that it was electrical 9not quartz) like some older railroad big clocks.

I have to look inside it a bit. Nevertheless, heated clock, how cool is that? And it's slightly radioactive too, but, boy, it glows nicely.
