Absolutely, I agree. It can be done. But so many times I've seen half a door or half a fender sprayed in-order to "blend in" and for me it's a no no. Where does it stop, spray the whole car because of one panel?

Brother Cactus,
I have nothing to add other than - please keep your sanity.

Do you want me to bring my potato gun and have a chat with the body shop?

If it's Guards Red from factory, it doesn't. Only the metallic colors had clear.

+1!!!

I hate the whole "blend" thing! WTF?! Why? What does it do? I've painted a lot of different things (cell phones, helmets, cars etc.) and never understood the whole blend thing.
If you can't match something, it doesn't make it better if you half "blend" your wrong color with the correct color.

I had a professional painter look at my car a couple of weeks ago. He said the car definitely had a clear coat. I'm pretty sure I have factory paint.

Bro Cactus, I truly feel your pain in this regard and hope that things work out to YOUR satisfaction. If not, I know some guys that would do anything for a bag of crack....although none of them can paint!

That could be true that the later cars had clear.

Easy to test, take some wax and rub hard, if your rag becomes slightly reddish, no clear, if it doesn't, clear.

So I expressed my nervousness going in and waited as long as I could because I wanted to avoid this very situation. The sideskirt issue finally pushed me to get this done and as I told them my thoughts they said "we will match it no problem" As we all stood around looking at it Friday they were not so confident and basically were walking around in circles saying they were not sure how to proceed. Great job at boosting my confidence........

Cactus, I have just been reminded by my spouse about a universal axiom: the squeaky wheel gets the grease. If you settle for less than what you want, the next guy will surely catch hell. Play it forward, bro!! It appears from comments by others that know better, (and from Jimmy Cliff) that, "You can get it if you really want it! But you must try, and try and try. You'll succeed at last!" We are ALL behind you!.

Body shops will say that they can match colors, but my experience is that you need a german paint expert who knows Glasurit paints.

A body shop had the PPG factory match the Arena Red car twice, once with a spectrometer (?) and once to a body part, and it came out crappy both times.

Later, for a roof and rear spoiler paint repair on the blue car, I went to a Porsche specialist, Jim East in Orange, who did an invisible repair. He used Glasurit paint and did an awesome job on spots etched from a caustic chemical leak at the Keystone Parade. You cannot tell, and he did not respray the entire panel.

It sounds like they still want to make it right which is a good thing. Keeping you from your car in this awesome weather, killing your battery and leaving a window down in a body shop is not. I understand your frustration. It may be time to have a conversation about what the next step is if they don't get it right on the next spray.

No personal experience on the shops I sent you, but it might be worth putting some calls in to feel them out if you need to to go that way. I truly hope HP can get it right for you - in a timely manner.

Bob-
Flying Finn is correct. If your paint is original GR, it does not have a CC.

GL with your chore.

I have a slantnose 912/911 hybrid rainbow frankenstein project with out built in pop up lights. I want to convert the front to/back 930 form (came across fenders and bought them take that wife!) Is this going to be to much trouble? The front is fiberglass slantnose fenders metal. If theres info somewhere please post! thank you!

[QUOTE=Cactus;7471381] Another thing that I questioned is the fact that they are using clearcoat and my car is single stage which even though it is low miles and the paint is in great shape it will still fade over time. My question is what happens if they can't get a match? BTW they were using the gas flap as their sample.

I believe this is your very problem. Clearcoat is not really clear. Different paint's have different tents and the manufactures have different types of clears. They need to make several spray cards with different clears from PPG?
I had my wing and splitters painted and they match perfect. My painter talked with me about the clears and even showed me two different one from PPG and you can definitively see the difference. So the paint my match your paint perfectly until the clear is applied. Don't let them quit on you. Hang in there. Reds are tough.
