g50/31 box

All of the /20 & /21 can have 3-6 changed easily enough, 1 & sometimes 2 are integral w/ the main shaft, the changeover trans #s are
G50.20 - 02693
G50.20 - 02174 (M220)
G50.21 - 05072
G50.21 - 03094 (M220)
before only 1 is fixed after 1 & 2 are fixed, to change them a new mainshaft is required(last price I saw Was ~$2000, I'me sure it's much more now)
The Motorsports boxes, /30 -/33 have loose gears in all positions 1-6
Many choose to leave the main shaft alone and change 3-6 and that works but isn'e really an optimal way to do it.

/31 is 1 step up from /21 which is a step up from /20
/32 has more good stuff and better gearing
/30 has the most good internals and the best gearing but isn't going to be generally available

I just did this last year. I agree with Bill, better (and actually way more cost effective) to simply sell your old box and buy a g50/31. In addition you also get a Porsche Motorsports LSD. As a bonus, I'm guessing your old box is a g50/21, which will be easy to sell for top $$$.
Here's a link to my impressions of the new gearbox:

The last time I priced up building one with original parts, the parts bill alone from Porsche came to just under £6k +VAT and the last used one we found sold for around £8k +VAT. I would think that you could build an equivalent box for maybe £5-6k with slight variations on the ratios, however I think a better plan may be to consider a used 996GT3 gearbox and fit the cable change gearlever to match.

A change of heart Jackal???
I saw your discussion on a P/heads about gear ratios, where you thought the standard ratios were better for your use of the car....Even if it did surprise me.
There are always people looking for these, some end up in Ultimas with big power etc....
For some reason the previous owner had the /32 in mine rebuilt at an OPC in 2001, remove, rebuild, refit was £11k!!!.....glad I didn't have to pay that particular bill!!!

thinking ahead & want to know my options
depends if i go the whole hog and do buckets, cage etc.. or keep it more as an all day, every day car... and this in turn depends on what my next car is etc.. so all part of the bigger picture
