[QUOTE=Bill Verburg;7431583]Last prices I saw
/32 north of $12k w/ a like exchange
/31 $north od $6.5k w/ a like exchange

I'm sure that jmarch has better #s

You could build one to that spec for less than that/QUOTE]
So could you price one out at current prices
w/
new mainshaft, steel syncros, billet forks, billet shift spindle

last prices I saw a few years ago was
$1950 mainshaft
$750 2nd gear set
$695 3-6 gear sets
$2350 for 40/60 lsd
h/d 1/2 shift fork $199
h/d sbillet shift spindle $275bearing kits ~$140 each
When it was all said and done, the transmission upgrade cost me approx $6K. I purchased the g50/31 gearbox at Sunset (with the core charge) for $10.8K shipped to my door. I then sold my old g50/20 for $4750. As you can see, this is way more cost effective than rebuilding your existing box to g50/31 spec.

Cheers,
Joe

And Joe even had a really really good G50/20. I just ran it hard at the track today for the first time and the LSD is still good in it . If you have the $ though go with the the g50/31 as even in a ~2400Lb car with as light a flywheel as you can get, the stock gear ratios leave you wanting.

That's great to hear Evan. And frankly, a bit of a mystery has now been solved for me as I'd didn't notice much difference (LSD-wise) between my old and new gearboxes. Granted, my car is only driven (somewhat aggressively) on the street, but the fact that the LSD in my old box is still good explains things.

I'm glad you're enjoying your car. It must be fantastic to drive.

Cheers,
Joe

Currently, Porsche only offers the G50/31 and G50/32 on an exchange basis: you must turn in one of those units.

They do still offer the G50/33 outright for $12493 and IMHO, thats a bargain for what you get. This is a good close-ratio box that has steel syncros on 3rd through 6th and a Motorsport LSD. Unless you have a '95 MY car with the removable 2nd gear, you cannot duplicate this for the same outlay.

Wow, I sure am glad I purchased my g50/31 when I did as I definitely had no like gearbox to exchange. I'm sure Bill V will chime in, but I believe the g50/33 is a Swiss version of the g50/31 with taller gearing than the g50/31 in the top 2 or 3 gears. A nice upgrade, but too tall gearing (much like the g50/20) in the upper gears.

Interesting idea from Colin re: adapting the 996GT3 gearbox to the 993. I posed this question awhile back but at that time no one had tried it and I didn't want to be the first!

Cheers,
Joe

Here is a comparison of some of the relevant g/b choices

JMO, but you are looking for a top speed in the 160s

Besided the shift linkage issues Chris Cervelli mentioned that the g96 is ~30mm longer and that the axle angle would be off too.

Traveling, and off the top of my head I don't recall exactly what Kim had Steve put in the yellow car, BUT while it's great for Thunderhill it is an absolute disaster at Laguna. So one size does not fit all for our tracks...............

Not to steer this thread too far off course, but does anyone know if G64/21's are still available from Porsche? Do they require a core exchange?

Or are there better options these days for us AWD folks?

Those are shown as NLA. No price, either.

FWIW, we have regeared the stock transmission with success,.....

Yes. According to PET, they don't even share the same transmission case part number:

std case (/20 & /21)
964.301.010.04

RS case (/31)
964.301.010.20

So does anyone know what's the difference between these 2 cases?

Interested to know this as well. You can still buy the internals for the 31.

My car is a Swiss RS with the G50/33 box. I find third and fourth are too low both for track and daily driving. If and when it ever needs a gearbox rebuild, I plan to re-gear 3/4/5 to /31 standard. Darn those Swiss noise regulations!
