Default designing the 964, but 993 drawings on the wall

Thought you guys might find these pictures interesting...

The pictures of the design team mocking up/sculpting a 964 rear wing, but look at the drawings on the wall... the 993 was just around the corner...

(pictures from Porsche Carrera by Heike K. Foltys, 1990)

That is a very cool picture. I am so impressed with people that can turn diagrams and drawings into a model with clay.

Very cool. Sadly, clay modeling is a dying art with 3D Cad net modeling taking over. The red study behind her in the second picture looks like a Cayman ....

I agree! The beauty of seeing the car form transformed in clay at full-size must have been something to see. As an architect we are doing the 3-D CAD modeling and can only see it in full size during construction.

I was on the original CAD team for the 777 when Boeing was trying to figure out how to do a full size digital mock-up integrated across all design departments in real time. In the beginning it was a nightmare, convincing management we had to have two KRAY computers to handle the digital information and then how to name, store and change all the parts and drawings so the links were maintained and everything was secure. Good times ....

I initially left this one out due to the fact that there's no 993 content... but based on the clay comments above...

I love those pics. I wonder if they knew how great these cars would be.

Having worked for Alias 15 years(now owned by Autodesk). I know a bit about car styling software. Studio Tools is the CAID used by every automaker in the world. I can assure you that clay is still a big part of car styling. It will bounce back and fourth, digital to clay and clay scanned back in to get to the end product. Clay is not going away anytime soon.

Love the images!

Discussion reminds me of the Airbus A380 development. One group designed the rear fuselage using one version of software, the other group designed the front fuselage using a different version of the same software. They went ahead with the manufacturing of the aircraft and when they tried to put the two pieces of the fuselage together, they didn't fit. At all.

Cost Airbus billions of dollars. Major boo-boo. Amazing screw-up.

Cool, we still use Alias for surfacing of the racecars we design.
