Default 4L big bore kit??? anybody

OK-gathering info on a 95 C4-lots of nice mods- and theoretically...a 4L big bore kit.

The motor was installed by this dealership back in 99-the first owner apparently had it assembled somewhere else.

I searched-can't find any reference to a 4L kit.

The dealer has cleaned up a lot of issues-but still no details on the motor. That is the 800 lb gorilla, stopping me from more seriously considering the car.

So, anybody have any insight on the big bore kit?

CMW Motorsports used to make a 4 liter kit and billet heads too, but I don't know much about them. 9Meister does 4 liter upgrades too, but if the car is on this side of the pond, it probably isn't theirs.

Mat Lowrance out of Reno/Truckee briefly ran a 4L in his race car. Back now to a 3.8L I'm not sure exactly what failed/was failure prone, but I don't think he was happy with non-Mahle pistons. Mat is ex-IMSA from the '80's, and pretty much wins all the PRC races out here overall. Last year at Sears, he kept two Grand Am spec 997 Cups in his mirrors............

Pacific Power Motorsports was running a 993 w/ a 4.0L motor a year or so ago (maybe it's 2 years ago now) - I wouldn't call it a kit, they were using rings from a Chevy that they'd massaged

no affiliation, they are a PCA GGR sponsor tho fwiw

Probably should stop by there sometime as they're basically right across the freeway from my shop. Not that I have a shop. But with the amount of personal projects popping up a casual observer probably wouldn't know it.

I've run a 4.0 litre engine in my 993RS & customer cars since 2006. The 9m 4.0 litre engines run a 80.0mm crankshaft with 103.0mm bore (=3999.5cc) and we use this combination because it utilises the largest cylinder diameter that we consider to be completely reliable in race conditions.

I believe that other tuners use a 105mm bore with the 76.4mm crank to give 3970cc (or 104mm for 3895cc), but I would not use this combination as I have grave concerns over the stability of the cylinders at this diameter.

Even if done correctly, how likely is it that a 4.0L motor would grenade in under 40 hours when used for track work?

One of the first 9m 4.0 litre engines is racing in a 993RSR in South Africa - I crated the engine over and it has not been touched in 3 seasons, which is well over 50 hours. My engine ran has run for a similar mileage and has just been stripped to use some of the parts in another project and everything looked perfect. Likewise the first one we built is in the back of the white 9m64RS Clubsport which has been used around the N'ring & Spa for over 3 years without touching it. Does that answer the question?

Colin,

Just tells us that not every 4.0L kit is created equal

As with all engines, power is made by keeping the bores round. Thin cylinder walls aren't a recipe for more power.

I can tell you boys, if I had massive funds, Mr. Belton and his magic elves would do some work on my car.

Default this 4L build

was installed in 1999, and has 30K miles on it. I don't believe the car saw any track use, cause it's pretty clean...at least with all the pictures I've seen.

So, an 11 year old 4L build, with 30k miles on it...that drips(ever so slightly) oil, according to the dealer. Probably should be no surprise that it's been on the lot for almost one year.

The car is awful pretty though. I still hope to get specific build details about the motor. The first owner is still a customer at the shop-someone built the motor for him, the shop simply installed it. They are going to contact him to hopefully get more detail info.

Until another car comes available to draw my interest...this one is it.

Thanks boys, that's reassuring.

Magdaddy, are you sure that the car you're looking at is not a 3.9 with just 104.0 bores? If so, worst case is that you may have an engine with oval cylinders and can simply replace them with new 104's or even go back down to 102's or 103's.
