interesting. I am no expert, but have heard many times that Single Stage paint is easier to polish, brighter, etc.

Whats nice about single stage if I understand it, is you can cut into the paint unlike 2 stage.

making touch up easy on bumpers etc.

Old car with single stage were harder paints, & would be more scratch resistant, but we can't use those paints anymore, due to all the bad VOC's. Water based paints either clear, or color is easier to scratch. Clear coat is paint, it's the same paint as a single stage, it just doesn't have any color.

Polished clear coated paints will have more depth, gloss, & celerity over a single stage paint. Single stage red when polished does stand out, & looks fabulous, especially if it was neglected. Reds in general have a awesome before & after detail look.

Both types are the same on cutting, polishing, & waxing. The old lacquer & lead paints are a totally different animal.

I would say I'm a "expert" as I work for a high end auto detailer part time. We get all kinds of cars, from 1950's American Iron, to Acura's to Ferraris.

Mine is a 1996, and I have red on the buffer pads every time, whether it is the speed buffer or the orbital. Don't think you can get red unless there is no clear coat.

Here is a pic or two of my paint from my GR cars over the years:

Thanks BTW. This thread just reconfirmed why I love GR so much!!

If you had a single stage 95 PC and you wanted to respray the hood, would you have it resprayed with a 2 stage process or single stage? Can you even find a a repair shop that would spray a single stage as I hear it is much harder to spray.

Hi Robert,

What is the paint code of your car - 80K or 84A?
