Round two! So thanks to Andreas, one of my issues seems to be delt with. Thank you Andreas! But now I have another issue. maybe someone has had the same. I find when I turn right hard I hear a loud noise from the right rear of my car. It kinda sounds like a tire rubbing on the fender wall. Although there is no rubbing of the tire. I even had a buddy watching when i do it. It happens when I turn hard at slow or fast speed. Could it be the PS pump whining? I have not taken it to my mech. yet since I just first heard it today. I know that I am a bit crazy when it comes to any new noise , slight or major and become an instant worry wort. But thats me! I probably shouldn't even have this car since I dont make the type of money most Porsche owners do. All I ever hear my brain say is OH SH*T this is going to be expensive. But at any rate things do go wrong and service is enevitable. Any ideas from the great rennlisters would be appreciated.

Easy thing would be to check PS fluid first. Mine was leaking and when the pump started drying up, the first symptom would be a kind of groaning noise when near full lock on steering.

Regarding being a poor Porsche owner - I know the feeling8^) but I'll bet you it's more common than you think.

+1 on the PS fluid level. Now the bad news: If the level is low you likely have a leak somewhere. You may want to sit down before continuing to read....in my case the steering rack was the source of the leak requiring a new one...parts, labor, alignment....you get the picture! There's an aero tray underneath the rack that does a good job of collecting any fluid without you knowing it until you hear that groan when turning. I'd check the level in the engine compartment and then look too see if there's fluid in that forward tray under the rack. Hopefully its not what I suspect. Good luck solving the problem and hopefully its not a leaking rack!

+1 on everything above. PS Fluid is low. Check undeneath your car between the 2 front wheels. You may see where all the fluid is leaking to. Steering rack time. Been there...done that.

PS: (no pun intended) Make sure that you don't drive the car with the fluid so low as you could damage the pump. Haven't been there...nor done that!

Also note the the PS sytem does not use regular fluid. Typically, I was thinking it used ATF, but a lot of people use a Pentosin fluid. Search under than name to find more.

Buy a PS rack rebuilt kit on line and have it rebuilt (if leaking). Keep ATF topped until this is done (Check at least every morning).

happened to me too, check PS fluid, i was down 4 oz. the noise went away and all is good in the world again.

Thank you very much for all the responses. I do know that my rack is leaking. I always try to keep an on on my levels. Topped off the PS last night when i got home. Spose I should start saving for a new rack.
I will take it to my mech. to make sure that what the noise is from. It sounds like you guys probably hit that nail on the head though. Thanks.

You might also be losing fluid where the hose comes out under the reservoir or where the banjo bolts go into the rack or... Never had these probs on my 993, but my 968 tends to leak in a couple places.

A PS pump is ambidexterous ..... it does not know if you are turning left or right - nor does it care: it simply provides fluid to the rack at high pressure of 90+ bar, and does so quietly as long as the reservoir is at min. level or above.

So the noise happens on hard rights: how about on hard lefts? A steering rack may 'groan' in fairly low frequency tones if passing fluid internally ... and will do so preferentially to direction depending on which seal is failed/failing .... but that noise comes from the front.

A cavitating PS pump ( loss of suction/reservoir side fluid) is generally a higher frequency noise .... and if the pump starts to run dry, makes a disturbing, much higer pitch gear whine - actually a howl. It doesn't make that noise for too long, however ....

So, what kind of noise is it .. and was the reservoir low? Did the noise go away when the level was topped?

If yes, go with the rack - if no, look for a R rear wheel bearing or CV joint.

Hello Garth, thats some great insight there. I could only get the noise to happen when I turn right. It sounded just like a tire rubbing on the fender. Before I drove the car agian, I checked the PS level and it was really low. I have a hard time telling whats too low and whats too much, if there is such a thing. So I filled it up to about half full.( or half empty, However you want to see it ) I drove it to work that day and did many tests. I did not hear the noise again. judging by what everyone has said, I'm thinking it was too low on fluid. I need to keep a better eye on that. I'm crossing my fingers that that was the problem , because if I try, I can kinda manage that problem until I'm able to get the rack fixed. And a big THANK YOU to everyone who took part here in my small problem.
