Default Icy, Cold, Snowy day...had to warm her up

Double checked the PSI on the tires for the winter (50), cranked her up and let her run while I was scraping the driveway (20 minutes), and drive her a little (about 6 inches).

Whew! What a day. Air cooled still sounds GREAT at idle.

I was just wondering about the advisability of crank and let idle...I was under the impression that it wasn't a good idea.

...or maybe not. Guess I'll wait till the snow melts and drive it.

Just a guess on my part but I'd think occasional starts would be better than no starts.

And that minimal revs (2K?) until warm and then moderate (3-4K?) revs until fully warm would be better than idle. More fun too.

Trae,

If you do a search on "winter storage," you'll find a wealth of information on how to best store your car over winter. It seems that most are in agreement that if you can't drive it fairly often and get all of the systems to full operating temperature, you're better off storing it and not running it at all.

From what I've read, in addition to the 50 PSI in the tires, the gas tank should be full and have an additive like Sta-Bil added so that you don't have issues with moisture in the fuel system come spring (Partially filled tanks tend to generate condensate as the weather cools). The engine shouldn't be started and allowed to idle as doing so doesn't sufficiently heat the oil and will result in condensate in the oil and the exhaust system. A battery tender is a good idea and some folks even go so far as to suggest moth ***** to prevent rodent damage.

Regards,
Terry

Concensus is...let it sit until it's out for the season. That way you avoid moisture in the exhaust system and engine from the heat generated that does not get burned off completely. Plus, cold cranking is hard on the engine (cold oil not a good lub!).
That said, I feel your need. I started mine because I had to move it out temporarily and it was music to cold ears.

And with that I withdraw my guess.

In the meantime, enjoy this:

Ah, who cares if it's good for the car or not. It's good for your soul to start it up and hear that sound .

Thanks for the translation! Definitely a good vid to crank the volume and pop-out and play at 720p rather than play embedded within rennlist.

This is BS, so long as you get the motor up to temp.

But I can see this turning into another one of those pointless, neurotic threads, worthy of a Woody Allen movie. Previous such threads include:

1) Should I start my car during winter storage?

2) What RPM should I drive it at?

3) What gear should I use at ___ MPH?

4) How long should I let the engine warm up before driving my 993?

5) Will I destroy the value of my priceless, irreplaceable 120K mile 993 by having the front bumper resprayed for rock chips?

6) Will I destroy the value of my priceless, irreplaceable 120K mile 993 by replacing ____ part with an aftermarket one?

7) Which is best, a 964, a 993, or a 997?

8) I installed a strut brace and IT TOTALLY TRANSFORMED THE HANDLING OF MY 993!!!!1

9) What tires should I get for my 993? I only drive on the street and this choice is 99 percent irrelevant, but I want to feel like I'm a skilled driver and can tell the difference between $400 tires and $100 tires.

10) Which tail should I get for my 993? I only drive on the street and this choice is 100 percent irrelevant, but I want to feel like I'm a skilled driver and can sense "aero" mods on my morning commute.

Etc.

+1.

But you forgot:

11) Will my car turn lunge and bite me if I use two different types of tires on the front and rear?

12) Engine tray on or off?

Anyone who's worried about exhaust condensation should just let the engine run (with a few blips of the gas) for for 20-30 minutes.
