immobilizer advice...now what?
Can't lock my car. Tried all the tricks....key back in the ignition, lights on and off, work the consol door lock switch, new battery in the fob. Anyone know what to do now......?

Follow up on the immobilizer.
After the car sits for about 10 minutes it will lock.
Anyone know what would happen if I dared lock it with the key? I THINK it might then unlock with the cursed immobilzer..dare I try?

What ever you do, do NOT use the key to lock the door! Ask me how I know.
Believe it or not, I have had success with this problem by wiggling the key, turning it back and forth in the ignition several times.
Hope that helps!

Thanks Bart and Booker. Years ago I had an problem with a dead battery in the immobilizer fob....while stranded on the edge of nowhere in the dark and cold......tried the key in the door....the rest is history.
Thanks for your advice about jiggling the key.....I will give that a try next.

993/907,
Have you explored swapping out your immobilizer with another to see if the fault is in the unit or if it's in the wiring of the system?

I would sacrifice an ugly virgin at this point....
Zombie....do you mean swap out the immobilizer push button fob? Yes...tried that too, but I will do it again tonight just to make sure. Range on it is good, battery is fresh. Latest gimmick is to wait about 10 minutes then it will lock. Or, sometimes, it will finally lock if I push the fob button about 15 times. Just holding the button down does nothing.
By the way, our only local authorized dealer will only work on newer cars, and usually just on warranty work.

I don't have many ideas but are you saying that "lock" is the only function not working? You can unlock it or reset the immobilizer with the remote when you want? If the remote works fine otherwise then I'd say it's not the remote. It only has the one button and I figure it is sending the same message everytime and the on-board immobilizer is deciding what to do. You could confirm if you had another remote but I gather you do not. If not the remote then I think Zombie is referring to swapping the on-board unit with one from another 993. Ken

Yessir Tigerrat, the "lock" function is the only one acting hinky. It unlocks fine, it "mobilizes" with the key in the ignition. At times the chime will "cry" after I remove the key from the ignition.
I have been able to fool it by re-inserting the key and pushing the remote to activate the little red lock lights.....but now it has caught on to that....next will it be "Dave, please don't do that Dave....."?
Still sound like the immobilizer module to you?

Well, one stab in the dark would be to disconnect the battery and see if the thing fixes itself like any other hosed computer. Remember that may mess up any OBD 2 codes and your idle for a bit. But seems worth a try to me. And you always ask was there any change to the car that immediately preceded this problem. Otherwise then sadly I think it's the unit and suggest the swap out idea.

Why couldn't you keep the windows down when you test functions? At least it would allow you to get back in the car.
What am I missing?
