No, I don't need to know about the birds and bees, and don't care about the Christopher Columbus, Leif Ericson, etc. I am a newbie having only owned a 993 for a couple of months, but having been a long-time Porsche addict.

What I am curious about, is how you got to the 993. Am curious as what brought you to own this car.

I'll start. In high school, my friends all like Corvettes, but I was drawn to the Porsches. When I had the funds I had a chance between a new 914, and a used 912. Bought the 912 and kept it for a couple of years until it became apparent that I needed more room for a new family. So for way too many years, I just had cars that were transportation. But in 2005, I decided I needed a car that was fun to drive. Enter a MINI Cooper. Great car and still my DD.

Recently (about 3 years ago), I found another 912 and spent time restoring it. Currently still have this car. While my daily driver is a MINI Cooper, with an occasional weekend drive of the 912, I decided I needed a Porsche that could be driven more than my 912. Enter my newest 993.

Cliff notes version:

'67 912 (years ago)

'06 MINI Cooper
'67 912 (purchased in 2007)
'96 993 (purchased in 2009)

I did not grow up as a Porsche fan. Was more into Ferraris. I even test drove a few but didn't have the courage. And one seller showed me his service records that were a little worrying (I think Ferrari parts are priced their weight in gold).
Then, while surfing mobile.de at work I came accross a 993 in color combination that I liked. Took an afternoon off, test drove it and fell for its charisma and bought it.

Well I may have you beat there -- I bought my 993 yesterday. I haven't even brought it home yet (it needs a front-end rebalancing, which the dealer is doing over the weekend).

About ten years ago a friend of mine -- a mechanical engineer, entrepreneur and CEO -- bought a 1982 911SC and I was hooked. I found myself a 1978 SC soon thereafter. My sister subsequently bought a 1983 SC which she has to this day.

I traded up to a 1987 930. I should never have sold that SC, but at least I sold it to a friend. Sigh. The turbo was lovely but the 4-speed transmission was difficult to enjoy in San Francisco. I felt that I had a thoroughbred trapped in the garage, and I never had the time to take it out and drive it as it needed to be driven. I sold it when I moved to the east coast, again to a friend who wanted the right car for his long daily commute through the California hills. Sigh. He adores it, but I die a little inside when I think about it.

I was Porsche-less for a few years until 2006, when my dad's 1989 Carrera came to live with me. 30K miles, Baltic Blue. It's in the garage right now, looking forward to meeting its new companion.

And why a 993? I first loved the look. To me the car has an absolutely beautiful shape -- it's curved like a bow, like all this tensile strength is ready to be released. And I like that it looks compact. I'm not quite so captivated by the 964s -- I love the "classic" 911 shape, and the 964 body looks strangely unfinished to my eye -- and I find the drive feel of the 996 to be too insulated. (Let alone the water cooled issue...) The thing I loved about my old 1978 SC was that I felt completely one with that thing when I drove it, despite the crotchety gearbox and rattles and drafts. I drove a 993 years ago and I had that same sense of "oneness" -- I know it sounds cheesy but I bet some of you know what I'm talking about! I vowed that when the time was right I would find one of my own.

My goal is to own (at least) one Porsche from each decade. I have what I consider to be the best 1980s 911 already; I think my new 993 will represent the best of the 1990s. Next will be a 1970s 911, but this will be harder because there are so many to choose from. An early 911S? Perhaps a cherry 912 with the chrome around the doors? Or perhaps my 1978 SC will come back to me.... Sigh.

That's my story. I'm looking forward to reading more!

Well I'll try to make it short. In my early 20's owned first an Austin Healey 3000, a Karmin Ghia and then a Volvo 1800E. Then for 35 years business sedans. A couple of years ago I got to a point where I felt like I could indulge myself with a "play" car. Over the years I coveted a 911, so after driving 88 & 89's, 993's and 996's, I settled in on a 993 as a good combination for a car that my wife and I could take on road trips as well as something that would have a little of the raw feeling of driving that first two seater the 1960 Austin Healey 3000.

It's been a great road trip car and as everyone here knows a blast to upgrade to your liking.

I've been in love with these cars since my uncle introduced me to them whe I was 11-12 (81-82). So many different memories of seeing these wonderful machines: 3(!) BRAND NEW 930 Turbos at our dealership in Victoria, BC in March of 83, hearing then seeing one of these very same cars (silver/blue metallic with dark blue interior) FLY down a deserted downtown street, sitting in my first (a new Guards red/black 84 coupe at the same dealer) and hearing that wonderful sound as the door shut (that stil gets me), later my first ride in one, a 78 930 (Green/brown) that blew my mind. A visit to the factory in November of 95, prime 993 production, left me with this: I WILL own one of these very cars.

I've had many Mustangs in my twenties, nothing fun in my early thirties (bought condos and then house), then I bought a ne 2002 Mini Cooper S. Fun car that got traded on a new 2003 S2000 in April of 04. I loved that car but I soon realized I could finally attain my dream. March 2006 my MB 95 coupe came home. Don't think it will ever leave. They are a very emotianal purchase and are far more than just a car. Spent many, many hours just staring at it. My sickness struck again in April 2008 while shopping for a new Honda Accord V6, I came home with an absolutely new-condition 2002 996. That got traded in October 08 for another 993, this time a blk/blk 97 coupe. Funny thing, I'm currently shopping for a lightly used 07-09 Toyota Tacoma and this Polar Silver/blue 95 C2 coupe keeps popping up. How'd that happen?

I was about 12 when I saw that pic in my local bike shop that we hung out at like every day. Was big into BMX and all the trick bike parts like I am today with my car. Anyway I figured out what car it was and where to see one and then bugged my dad to take me to see them whenever possible!

I grew up reading my Dad's Road and Track mags in the '70's. Once I got to high school I got into Mopars. The cars were all gone for many years after. I didn't get to own a Porsche until I sold my big block Demon 26 years after graduating from high school!

I think I was destined to be a Porsche Gal. I was SUPPOSED to goto my first Prom in my date's brothers new 914 in '76 and at the last minute his brother decided not to let him drive it. Then for my Senior Prom in '77 my Date was promised by his uncle that he could take his Porsche and then THAT didn't happen. In '79 my brother bought his Porsche when he was 17 and I was 18. FINALLY I got to go for a ride in a Porsche! I about pooped my pants, still I thought it was one cool ride but never was able to buy one myself until Robert happened and then the Porsche Monster in me was awakened and the rest is history. See my signature for all my (and our) history
