Default Have you ever removed your rear stub axle nuts?

I want to repack my CV's while the transmission is out. I've done this before about five-six years ago, but it was at a friend's house. I don't think he had a large air compressor or air impact gun and we had no problem breaking that 340 ft/lbs nut loose. Now I have a dinky air compressor and an air gun rated for 400 ft/lbs and they ain't cutting it. Car is immobile, so it's going nowhere. Anyone have some ideers?

3/4" breaker bar? 1/2" breaker bar with pipe extender? I tried to use my cheapo craftsman torque wrench to loosen this nut and broke the head in two.

A bad idea on many levels, but at least I got to buy a better one.

I found a garage sale 3/4" torque wrench for $20 and have been using that recently . (still a bad idea, but it was cheap...)

Archimedes said, "give me a lever long enough, and I can move the world." You should be able to move your stub axle nuts with a breaker bar and pipe extension.

breaker bar with a pipe extension works fine. 3 foot pipe, you need about 100 lbs of force. after you put it back on, put a dab of paint on the nut and the thread , so you can make sure the nut is not backing off.

Did this last week -- 3/4" drive breaker bar to loosen, 600ft/lb capacity torque wrench to tighten (to 335ft/lbs).

chris is one of the few with torque wrenches that go up to 600ft/lbs

Often a good place to "borrow" on is from your friendly local alignment shop.

My Ingersoll-Rand 'titanium' air wrench spins them off pretty well, but the 3 Ft long 3/4" breaker bar also does the trick.
If one hasn't these tools at home, pop off the center caps & drive to a friendly garage: they can reach in and loosen the nuts ... tighten them back to something you can live with (~150lbs.ft) & drive home. Reverse this approach when finished & go looking to 'hire' that 3/4" torque wrench.

I used a 1/2 inch breaker bar and stood on it ( I'm 200lbs). Came off no problem.

A torque wrench is a measuring device. It's not meant to loosen fasteners...

I used the handle to my floor jack with a 1/2 inch ratchet. Piece of cake.

I had no problem today with a 3/4" breaker bar and a 4' iron pipe. CV repack job was a cinch too.

Hi There

I wanted to do the same thing while my rear suspension was apart, but of course once the suspension is off there is nothing to torque the nut against so I ended up taking the inners off and repacked them all and changing the boots in situ. A really messy and difficult job!

Best of luck with yours....

Berni
