Default 993 3M Rear Wheel Chip Guards

Anyone now of a place to purchase replacements on the cheap? Are they really needed? Mine have turned yellow and cracked. Time to replace or just take off.

Do you just peel them off? My 95 came with ones on the rear fender and a clear bra on the front. The white edges drive me crazy.

Mine are a bit yellow as well and I've been thinking about replacing them. I spoke to a local shop that is supposed to be expert in clear bra application, as I was thinking about getting the hood, bumper etc. covered as well, and they warned me that if the chip guards are the factory originals, then peeling them off could take some paint with them. So, I've been reluctant to touch them.

Wow, thanks for the info. I think I will just live with them for now.

Peeling factory stone guards off of factory paint will absolutely NOT take paint with them.

Some come off easy, some leave glue that takes time to clean up.

There are some tricks to assist in removing them. You can check out a DIY here: http://fdmotorsports.net/Stone%20Guard%20DIY.pdf

I got mine from FD, great vendor and service..

Pain in the neck to remove the old ones, took about 2 hrs per side. Used a bondo applicator with a hair dryer to remove.

I had my 993 rear fender "stoneguards" replaced professionally, as I don't believe you should try to save a few bucks, instead have it done right:
-these come as a kit, to properly make an exact fit.
-professionals know how much heat to apply to get the old stuff off.
-the company replaced the 3 M on the rear-view mirrors for free, a big plus for me!

in the end of course, you have to decide :-)

My .02 cents of advice,

Bert

Wow, thanks for the response. I think I will order a pair from FD Motorsports! I removed one side last week in about 2 hours. I have since purchased a heat gun which should make #2 much easier. No risk of paint being scratched or chipped off as long as you use a pliable plastic scrapper and lots of adhesive remover and take your time. Good Luck!

Just be careful with the heat gun... they produce a lot more heat than a hair dryer and can actually damage the paint if you get too ambitious!

great advice...

the hair dryer method is a safe bet.

It isn't rocket science, just a little work. Or not... some come off very easy.

If they are cracked and yellow, they're going to be a pain in the *** to remove. I've done two sets (my car and another) and they are difficult at best to get off completely. Easy to put on, and well worth the effort, they look so much better!

I got mine from sunset since FD didn't exist then.

There's an old thread about this but will repeat info. Go to a sign shop and beg/buy about a pint of "RAPIDTAC". They use it to remove old vinyl signage and it does a great job of removing the stoneguards and adhesive. Be sure to put it in a plastic bottle that will withstand the stuff without "melting". Apply to the stoneguard film with a small, clean rag. To facilitate the job, go to an auto glass shop and beg/buy what's known as a "Pilkington Scraper" It's a hard plastic tool about 8 inches long with a flat chisel edge at one end. That tool and the RAPIDTAC will make short work of the film without harming the finish. I've done both my two cars with this method.
