Exclamation Exhaust Fitment Explained: Difference between narrow and widebody exhausts / tips ?

I think I have my answer... but just want to confirm :

C2, C4 (narrow body) :
- have tips that go straight (in line with the mufflers)

C4S and C2S (widebody) :
- have tips that have an angled connection (on the inside)....
- (normal, straight in appearance from outside of course)
- use the same muffler as standard (narrow body) cars ? <--- this is what I want to know !

Turbo :
- has different exhaust than the C2/C4 or C2S/C4S cars
- but tips fall "in line" with exhaust... i.e., the connection between the exhaust and the tip is straight

THEREFORE :
1. the mufflers between the narrow body and C2S and C4S are all interchangeable
2. the tips, however, (bet c2/c4 and c2s/c4s) are not interchangeable
3. the muffler of the turbo is unique to it
4. the tips of the turbo and the c2/c4 have the same type of connection, and therefore, ARE interchangeable (u could in theory, put narrow body tips on a turbo... but of course... you wouldnt )

---> THe usual suspects.... care to chime in?
(calling Chris, Steve W., Mark and Darin in 5....4.....3..... )

Not the "Mark" you referenced as a usual suspect, but here is a picture I stole from another post a few years ago. NB tip on the left...WB on the right.

IIRC the turbo tips are straight, but shorter than the NB tips (because of the different mufflers?). So if you were to put the NB tips on a turbo, they would stick out further ...or maybe it's the other way around.

I can confirm that 1 through 3 are all correct (only thing about the mufflers is that you've got either Gillets or Bischoffs), not sure about 4 (paging the FD Motorsports boys).....

I think tips for narrow body came in 2 sizes, one for standard cars with a welded on 'back-guard' to fill in the opening like the one on the left

and a larger, squared-off oval size for motor sound.

Hello,

I've got no knowledge about turbo, except that mufflers are typical!

For C2/4/2S/4S there are two kind of mufflers, totally interchangeable which are gillet and bischoff. The difference is that with the bischoff one you will need to place a "biscuit" between muffler and exhaust tip, while the gillet has integrated it in its shape.
There's a modified version of these two kinds which is for RS cars and affects only the inside components.

About exhaust tip you have:
- oval ones 'standard' delivered with non varioram (narrow body of course)
- big oval ones sold as sound package (which doesn't change any sound btw)
- square ones for varioram narrow C2/C4
- big (oval or square ??) for varioram narrow with sound package
- square ones for vario widebody S/4S with the angle described above
- big (oval or square ??) for varioram widebody with sound package

Cheers!

Alf,
You are pretty much correct. All NA cars share the same mufflers (either Bischoff or Gillet) and are completely interchangable (with the sealing rings required at the tip for Bischoff). The tips however are not. The NA widebody cars require the tips to be offset to fit the wb bumper (the exhaust openings are further out than on the nb cars). Twin turbo's, even though they are wb, have a different muffler design (internally and externally) from NA cars, do not use offset tips. TT mufflers were made specifically for the tt, so don't use an offset. Rather than design new mufflers for WB cars (non-turbo) Porsche just made the tips offset.
Turbo exhaust tips are a little shorter, but you can use NB tips on a turbo, they will work.

Wow...my photo still lives.

BTW, the tips on the right still had the adapter on when I took the photo.
