OT--Speeding in Australia
Had a great vacation in Australia and New Zealand.
Just recieved a copy of a camera detected speeding offence from the rental car company. Says we were doing 71 km/hr in a 60 km/hr zone. Fine is $84AUS.
I don't know when we may return to Australia.
Anyone have any experience "ignoring" these types of tickets fron foreign countries?

I don't know about foreign countries, but I didn't pay a parking ticket when I had a rental car in Denver and 6 years later I get a letter from an attorney demanding the $10.00. I rented it in the companies name but my name was on the credit card. I went ahead and paid it. Chances are you can't run from it. Were you speeding?

my fear would be that the car rental company will merely charge your credit card and it will be tough to dispute - on the other hand Interpol will probably not try to extradite you!!!!

We hope you enjoyed living in constant fear of the Revenue Raisers and driving with your eyes on the speedo instead of the surrounding area, other cars and trucks, and high licensing standards (NOT) that infest our Great Nations roads..... you know the ones - all of the single carriageway 1 lane each way ROAD (note singular) that connects our largest 3 cities.
Personally I have no experience with speeding.
My dung beetle couldn't pull the skin off a rice custard - let alone drive over 60km/h.
I love the advertisements and mantra that this is NOT revenue raising - its a safety matter.
I have however heard from a mate of a mate of a mate that if you ignore it will not go away. The OSR will chase you. Its REVENUE. That's their job.
Pay the fine - at least you wont lose any points.

It wont happen - All the rental Company has to do is fill out a "statuatory declaration" (that appears on the back of all camera related offences) and nominate the renter as the driver and then the debt passes to the renter.... The Co is absolved of any responsibility at this point.
But I wouldn't know - I have only seen such things on the iterwebnet.

I've had a couple of unpaid out of province speeding tickets for many years. The one in Saskatchewan used to show up as a Crown debt on my credit bureau reports.
Recently I got a statement from Canada Revenue Agency that they had applied part of a refund they owed me, to the Crown in Right of Saskatchewan, to pay the item.
Orwellian, indeed.

Simon - good to know when I visit my friends in Adelaide... every place is different. in the states most speeding tickets are much more than $76 so in that regard it could be worse....

No expert in this field. The Nordic countries Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway co-operate and collect fines. I have received parking tickets in Denmark on my private car and got the bot sent home a few months later. You just have to pay. The same applies to speeding fines. In all, it is more and more collaboration between countries in Europe. It will probably be harder to escape the fines in the future. So far, one can ignore parking tickets and take a chance.
It is not simply to collect debts in other countries. It requires agreement. No country is probably willing to devote resources to collect small debts. Which parking fines, speeding fines and other minor traffic offenses may be considered.
