Thought I'd offer this here first. This is the North America/Europe map version of the 4.3" color 3D graphics screen with lifetime Traffic alert unit. Here's the link to Amazon for the same unit today:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001ELJEQU/...l_53oxquelgy_b

I bought this new July 20th this year from Amazon for $406.99 with a one year warranty for a European driving trip this summer and the unit worked flawlessly. Blue Tooth hands-free phone connection also works great. In addition, I spent another $70+ for an upgraded Garmin silicone friction dash mount that conforms to ANYTHING and sticks like it's glued, (even in the 993) and a plug-in cigarette lighter mount that has a plug for charging while in operation as well for my D.D., plus a premium leather cover with front flap for storage all of which will be included with original box and chargers. I want to get $200 plus shipping. I'm selling because I'm using my iPhone for navigation now.

Jon,

Which iPhone app are you using for navigation? Read pros and cons about how they compare to a native Nuvi?

Lastly can that iPhone app be used internationally?

TIA.

I'm using a 32Gig iPhone3GS and the TomTom app for North America, I got the app on sale for $70, it's usually $100. They just upgraded the app to include text to speech directions and traffic alerts. The Navigon app is the next biggest competitor but they are all limited by the built in GPS system in the iPhone which is not very robust and can lose signal amongst taller buildings, trees etc. TomTom came out with an in-car cradle for iPhone with built-in GPS booster antenna and software plus blue-tooth/mic/speaker for hands free calling and a built in iTunes control panel built into the app. I've had it for a week now and it's really slick. So far, it works and looks/sounds as good as the Nuvi. Here's a pic of the cradle:

I posted about it a while back: https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ferrerid=66492

I bought these cables from Crutchfield for jacking the audio through the 993's Alpine CDA-9884 head unit since it didn't have a 3.5MM audio jack in the front ...

... and I'm having the cradles cigarette lighter plug power cable hardwired into the car in a couple of weeks. The best thing about it is you can listen to iTunes through the stereo and the app lowers the volume for incoming Navigation directions and phone calls, then resumes iTunes afterwards. Blue-tooth hands free linkup, speaker and mic work great for phone calls as well so, for me, it's a Trifecta. I plan on using this in Europe in the spring so I'll have to buy the Western Europe app which is, of course, another $140. Everybody's gotta eat, right? I'll post pics of the car installation when I get everything done in a new thread.

The map app it comes with works as good or better than the Nüvi. Except it does not have spoken directions.

Worked fine for me in Europe, even on the Croatia coast cruise. A girl from Mexico asked me if t would find her house in Mexico City. I gave her the iPhone, she typed in her address, and there it was.

I just ordered a http://joby.com/gorillamobile

Do you mean the iPhone Maps app that comes with the phone? Yes, it's amazing, even gives you local bus routes with numbers, connections and timetables but no voice directions. The new version of the TomTom app (free upgrade) has text-to-speech spoken directions as of late November.

It seems they sell every unit they make and are backordered (what world wide recession?). Mine took 3 weeks in November, I'm sure Christmas is jamming the works. For some reason, they don't continue to take backorders past a certain point (probably a months production), so if you order online, you have to hit them when they have slack in the line. I'd call them and order in person to get a slot in line.
