I ended buying from Rennspd off Ebay for the RS clone wing swap. I was nervous given the experience AL Z had, but the prices were crazy high everywhere else.

I figured I had the backing of PayPal in case the ducktail wasn't as promised. Even called PayPal to ensure no loopholes.

I bought one, it showed up in good time and in excellent shape. Literally ready for paint after some very light sanding. I may have gotten lucky, not sure but it worked out.

This is not a email to support Rennspeed but I think many aftermarket body parts suppliers produce crap. MA Shaw is no exception to that. I have had two 993 turbo decks from them that had poor construction, poor fit and terrible surface finish. After conversations with Shaw his remedy was that my painter could not be a very good one since professional one give the entire wing a coat of filler to prepare the surface. That statement should say it all about Shaw's standards. I had little choice since his were the best available at the time and I had to do whatever it took to give my customer a good end result. The one on my personal car took 9 hours of prep before paint. That was correcting the pinholes and surface imperfections.

Bottom line......... go into any aftermarket body part purchase with eyes open and you won't be as disappointed if you are delivered something that needs more work to make it "like new".

We have sold quite a few Getty Design 993 ducktails (including the one I put on my car) with good results. Shimming and fitting the tail is fairly easy and the finishing/painting was done by a body shop.
Current price is $625 for the DT (FRP-fiber-reinforced plastic)
You will need an older SC style grill (used-$150, new-$300)
Paint/finish work depends on the body shop. Mine was around $300.

Tony,
Count your blessings you received a good tail and did not have to deal with Peter to return it.
That guy is a piece of work, to say it politely.

As Darin said, Getty design makes a great quality duck tail for the 993.
Spend an the extra 100 bucks and go with the Getty design.
Next Rennspd customer may not be so lucky..

Default Ducktail

Timely post. I'm having a ducktail made by Gary Stratton Motorsports in Florida from a used metal decklid. He is also installing a 996 3rd brake light into the tail lip and Darin's script logo will be installed. Will post pix when completed.

When you unplug the wires from the old tail, you will reuse the one in the center that goes to the light. The other one unplugs from the spoiler motor and I basically zip tied it all together and it is just up under the decklid.

I've been pleased with my Getty Design tail, Darin and I did ours around the same time. It was by no means perfect out of the box, it needed priming and some gentle finishing to get the fit right but overall I have no complaints, it fits well, lines up nicely with the fender lines, and three years later no warping or hairline cracks.

I posted some pics and comments of my install but could not find them in the archives. My ground cable I simply tucked under the sound pad, and the electrical cable is attached to the pivot arm. I decided leave the light on the original deck lid rather than fool around pulling it out.

For you guys installing the lid you will need to decide how you want to hold up your lid. The stock factory gas struts are way too strong and I imagine overtime will warp the fiberglass. Some guys have used a prop rod a la factory, I opted instead to use a set of worn out struts that a member on here was kind enough to send me. They have just enough pressure left in them and work perfectly plus I don't have to fool with the prop rod.

i dont want to reuse the cables, i want to leave the stock wing, stock!

so, the easiest way to do this, is by unpluging the cables here right?: (see pic)

I unplug here and the earth strap (ground cable), and its done! right?

Irule,
That is correct.
Unplug the ground and the harness on the passenger side corner by the oil dipstick.
You will also need to umplug one more aluminum looking box about 2inches by 4 inches located on the right hand side of the center consale. Under the dashboard. This is needed to keep from getting the red spoiler warning sign on the center consale.
Very easy to do. Any other questions let us know or pm me and I can send you my phone number for additional help.
Cheers...

Irule,
If you go to P-car.com you will find quite a few articles on how to work on a 993. They were quite helpful when I first entered the 993 world over 13 years ago.
