Pics of the low-mile '02 I owned for a year or so. Great car but couldn't justify an M5 AND a 993... so I went back to the p-car and haven't looked back (until now, dammit... thanks guys )

Oh my. A chance to get one of my all-time favorites ... or divorce.

I'm thinking.

Dave I am mulling the same question right now as I consider buying one of the two air cooled's I have my eye on. My wife? or a third 911? Dont laugh I can appreciate what a difficult decision it is.

Depending on the production month, I'd try to confirm the amount of oil usage. It may not be a problem with the 2000 or if it ever was, it could have been fixed by BMW. Just check. The self dimming rear view mirror contains a liquid that can go bad and form a circle. This is $600+ replacement. Check that the mirror doesn't have this issue.

Typically small issues like MAFs, O2 sensors, cam position sensors, etc need replacement over time. Check that the radiator fan turns with only limited resistance when you push on it. Extreme difficulty to turn by hand could mean a bad fan clutch. These can go kaboom if they suddenly seize. NAV screen can lose pixels. Visually check that all the pixels are lit.

OEM rear sway bar brackets often crack from the torque. Stock is really too thin for nearly 370 ft/lbs of torque. There's a thicker aftermarket version many go with. Check underneath for cracked brackets. It's a cheap repair.

If you want to stay original, confirm the rims are the OEM Chrome Shadows that only came on the e39 M5. Vanos solenoids can require replacement. Depending on how the car has been driven, the clutch could need replacement at 70k. I'd buy a car with complete maintenance records so you can determine if it's been replaced.

And of course, just like the 993 some e39's get the check engine light (SES) if the air injection ports ever plug up. Some things just don't change.

It's basically a very well made car with few problems if maintained. On the other hand, there are some out there that have been flogged and can be a real money pit.

Some tech info in this link. (Trojanman, nice Imola Red)

Very cool picture. Looks the the M5 is suffering from the same bloating problem the 911 is having.

That Imola Red really does it for me!

the e39 M5 is one of my all time favorites. That, and the z3 M coupe. I've had two z3 M coupes and an e46 M3:
