Default Rear Shock Leaking! ;-( What to do?

Hi!

Well, its been an "exciting" two weeks of 911 C4S ownership already. Thanks to the good folks at Otto's in Venice with clearing the readiness codes, my car passed CA smog! That was one hurdle passed.

They liked my car alot. Said it was very clean (bought it from Richard Sloan btw). One thing that they noticed is there is a small leak from the drivers side rear shock. They said it probably did that because the car wasn't driven alot (only 37K miles). Otto (John) said not to worry about it, and just drive it, and next time I bring it in for service we can look at replacing it.

How does that sound?

Bought my 993 with 34K on the clock. Paper trail showed only 3-4K miles on the clock in the past 4 years. Car was obviously sat allot when I bought it. PPI revealed the shocks/struts in all 4 corners were in various stages of leaking to just plain shot. Not surprised, yours sounds similar. Replaced a 4 corners in my 993 with Bilstein HD's. Very happy so far. Just a street car for spirited driving and to/from work on nice days. Most track goers here will suggest PSS10's for track.

You are lucky you got 37k miles from your factory "Monroe" shocks. For whatever reason Porsche used some pretty lousy shocks for the 993, however the good news is they realize that and went with a different supplier on the 996 (The 996 shocks lasts forever).

The other good news is that many 993 owners have went through the same issue and now there are several suspension options avaliable for the 993s that will give you better performance and longitivity.

Just do a search and you will see.

Good advice all around. I think I will go with Biltstein HD's next time I bring it in for service, so in 6 months to a year but I'll monitor the shock and ride quality and see how it goes.

Toss on a set of ROW MO30 ( or softer MO33) springs with the HD's for a better working combo.

BTW, whatever you decide on getting, I would highly recommend having Darin at West End Alignment do both the install and alignment. You can't beat the service and price.
