Hi guys,

I would like to retro-fit the small light which is located above the ignition.

However, my Porsche dealer is a bit confused about which parts to order.

Does anyone out there have a close-up photo of the beast?

I saw someone on here that had a high intensity white LED surface mounted into the downfacing surface of part of the dash right above the ignition area. It was hooked up to the dome light circuit I believe. Looked great. I plan on doing this myself in the near future.

I think it's weird that you don't have it in your car. I thought they all did. Was this a US only thing? Or was it only for certain years???

You can tap into the wires in the front trunk light to do it yourself. That's what I did. Then installed an LED with a simple LED holder. Everything from Radio Shack. Works great. Somebody did a write-up on that, probably 3 - 4 yrs ago.

As far as I'm aware, the courtesy light was installed on the late models of the 993.

My car is from 1995, so I guess it is from the "pre-ignition light" period.

Judging from Mike's photos, I have the right parts.

It seems as if one simply has to drill a hole, and pop in the rubber mounting also used for the light in the ashtray.

I have already tapped into the wiring of the trunk light, so I'm all set to go. Just have to take a drill to my dash!

can you put the part number(s) here for future reference?

I looked into this at one time... and the U.S. porsche dealer could not locate the part on the PET.

FYI : it was not available on 1993-95 Porsche 993's

I would strongly recommend the LED over an incandescent bulb, if that's what Porsche uses. The LED is really bright, much much brighter than it looks in the pic there.

My 96 doesn't have it either. I thought about retro-fitting it, but I use the light on my key head instead.

dito -- also use the light on my key head. Though the LED solution's a bit sweeter...

I guess I'll leave it and use the key light. If I put one in and it burns out I'd have to placard the car for daytime use only.

Have a '96 C4S and don't have it either. Guess it started in the '97s?

For those repairing existing lights don't forget to check fuse #11 (7.5 A) as it powers the ignition light (and trunk and eng. comp. lights). I first replaced the bulb (it was burned out) but it still wouldn't work, opened the hood and discovered the trunk light was out too. Found fuse #11 was burned out too, replaced and they all work.

I've been wondering what that "hole" above the ignition was in my car, and meanwhile have been frustrated with having to blindly hunt for the ignition with my key (scratching the crap out of the surrounding area).

I read this, went out to the car, pulled out a guage (never done that before either), found the wire and bulb, jiggled the bulb, and it turned on.
