Post Ignition key light

My ignition key light worked some of the time, but now it does not work at all. Is there an easy way to get to the bulb to check it? Could it be somethong else? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tom

Tom,

Use a small screwdriver to pry the two pieces of plastic apart and replace the battery. Remember how all the little parts go back together.

I'm sorry I did'nt explain the problem properly. The light that is not working is the the light in the dashboard that lights the area where you insert the key.

Tom,

I think the best way to get to that light is to get to it from the top through one of the gauges. But first you will have to remove one of the gauges. I tried to pry the light housing out from the outside one time and that didn't work too well.

Question

There is a light that illuminates the ignition on the dashboard? I curse the Porsche engineers when I get into the car and go home at night because I can't see the ingition switch. Guess I'll have to take a look and see if I can find the burnt out light ...

Tom,

That was an added feature that was added to the 993 cars in the late 96 production year.

One of the reasons I converted to the lighted key head was to light my way to the ignition switch at night in my early production '96.

Anyone know what's involved in a retrofit of the oem ignition light?

Dan,

Here is what I have compiled so far for anyone who is interested in installing the ignition switch light.

Parts needed:
964 632 113 01 Bulb holder ignition starter lock (just a light bulb holder)
N 017 751 2 bulb 1.2 Watt
999 632 014 00 Bulb holder 2 pole
And some electrical wire, try to get 1 red wire and a brown/white wire.

Based on the 97/98 schematic, the ignition lock light (2 wires) is connected to the follwing:

(1) Red wire - connect this wire to the red wire behind the ignition lock. This is the wire for the buzzer contact in the ignition lock.

(2) Brown/white wire - connect this wire to the left/right interior light harness plug pin # 1 of the 8 pin connector, the harness plug for the interior light can be found underneath the parcel tray, based on the diagram picture location I am pretty sure the German's is trying to say the "center console".

(2a) This could be an alternative connection for the above (2) connection. Connect the same brown/white wire from the ignition lock light to pin # 2 of the 6 pin connector of the luggage compartment light located on the right side of the luggage compartment lid hinge.

The above wiring connection is for the coupe only, looks like the RS and the cab is a little different.

I have not done this install on anyone's 993 yet, so I can only be as accurate as what I was able to understand from the schematics.

Thanks, we can always count on you.
I'll take a look this weekend. Absent some obvious problem, I plan to get the parts, do some limbering up exercises, & head under the dash - when the weather gets a bit warmer

Can you describe where *exactly* the light is or should be? I still can't envision it.

Thanks,
Luis

I just got the 3 needed parts (holder, lamp holder and lamp) and cannot figure out where the rubber holder goes, it has a round ring which is about 6mm and looks like it is supposed to fit into a round hole. is there another trim ring or diffuser that mounts in the dash?

George,

I think you will have to drill the hole yourself.
