It has been a little over one month since the last post and I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that responded. You made many of us (with no or little funds available for major repairs) feel much better about our cars.

Geez. The car is IRIS BLUE. THe snow moustache is from driving in a snowstorm for 3 hours through the Appalachian mountains. Blizzaks rule!
I'm burning a quart every 4-5K. I change the oil every 15K. I believe that a proper warmup is the key and it helps that I've been the only driver. Looking foward to 300K.

Well, I'm close having just turned 90,000 and I'm burning about a quart in 4000-4500 doing around town and short trip >100mi driving. I need to take a road trip to really get a benchmark. The car loves to run, pulls like a train with a nice blast of torque and power from 4300 up to redline. The engine is dry and the chain covers are just now showing oil moisture at the bottom edge. The car was a one-owner executive who had it dealer serviced by the book up to 82,000 miles which probably helped keep the motor in good shape. When I bought my '87 cab new, there were several cars re-built under warranty for bad valve guides. I had mine serviced per Porsche schedule by an independent (yearly oil changes) and the car never burned any oil between changes right through 56,000miles, period. I think it's the luck of the draw with these motors. Some drink, some don't, some drink to excess ....

I have a 97 C2 76k miles, and just did a vacation road trip, 2,979 miles, 22.77 miles per gallon and used less than 1/2 quart to top off the oil when I returned. The other Porsche in my avatar, a 92- 964C2 with about 128k miles uses about 1/2 quart every 2,000 miles. Drive them a lot, drive them hard, but do not abuse them.... works for me.

A recent post about purchasing a 993 and believing that a re-build was required on our cars means it is time to revive this older thread. To all you new buyers, good luck with your search

156k, and using 1 qt/2500 miles. I am considering my rebuild options though. mild massaging to get to 325hp; i don't think i want to supercharge.

139K and running well. No noticeable oil burning, but since I've switched to Brad Penn 15/50 my oil usage has gone up considerably. It use to be around 2K/qt and now it's seems to be around 1K/qt. I'm switching back to M1 15/50 and see if things change. If not, the rebuild will be soon than later.

I think it's going to take more than mild massaging to get to that number. $30K of engine mods the previous owner spent on the yellow car resulted in 315HP...........an honest, verifiable number. Friend is building a PRC GTL car, and about $15K of work will hopefully get him around 325. Somewhat restricted class, though, in running stock intake manifold + slightly undersized exhaust.

What is a proper warmup? I honestly want to know.
Thanks.

I'm at prospective 993 buyer and also have been scared by the maintenance concerns you hear about 993s.
I'm looking at a car that has 40-50k miles and had both the SAI done and a clutch. What are the implications of that?

A year and 3000 later I've added 1 qt so far. The last two owners used M1 15-50 for the past 10 years. I may switch to Brad Penn 20-50 in the spring since I've had good results with it.

Difficult to know without a lot more info. Many original clutches last much longer than 40-50k miles. What state is the car located in? If a tough emissions state like CA or MA maybe there were some issues there. Nothing as far as emissions testing in FL yet, is there?
