Who has 100k and NO top end rebuild??
#32
These posts are very encouraging! Too many 'doom and gloom' stories in the past where it sounds like MOST of these cars need the top end rebuilt. Obviously from the results shown so far (in just a few hours) this is not the case. New owners or potentially new owners can be scared to death. This helps and will only encourage future sales which helps everyone. Thanks to all. Keep 'em coming.

That would be an interesting data set too. I would hypothesize it would be the cars that did a lot of sitting, rather than driving, when they were newer. It seems like it's the "mid-mileage" cars from my observations (65-85K.)

I think this is a great question. As a newbie, reading these threads I pretty much consoled myself into thinking a rebuild was pretty likely before 100k... in fact, this is my favorite thread so far! Potential for $8k in slope dollars instead.
I'm nowhere near 100k (47k) and haven't put many miles on the car so far, but very little oil consumption... not enough to measure in my 1200 miles to date.

Feel free to start your own thread my friend. While looking for my somewhat affordable dream car in '08 and early '09 and reading these numerous "needs a top end rebuild" "needs a top end rebuild" "needs a top end rebuild" or "most cars will need a top end before 100k" it is enough to scare the crap out of anyone looking for a 993. I only want to hear the positives of Porsche 993 engines for a change. I very much appreciate all the owners that have posted.

It's also illustrative why a good PPI with a leakdown is soooooo important before buying one of these cars. I too am always dismayed by the (mostly low mileage) guys posting about how any car nearing 100K "needs" to budget for a top end. I call BS.
I've got 75K on my clutch too.
I can't remember his screen name, but there's a guy with an Aventurine C4(?) with snow all over it in his profile pic with well over 200K, maybe 250K. Maybe he'll chime in here also.

I believe that frequent oil changes are key to engine longevity. I've been that way with all my cars, which I keep for years....examples:
1985 Mustang GT. Purchased new. Got totaled in 1998 with 240,000 miles. No rebuild. ( I must say, I went through a lot of clutches i n LA)
1997 Explorer, still in family w/ 160,000, no major work.
2001 Explorer, DD, 140,000 miles, no work.
I just change the oil every 3K.

124,xxx on my '95 993 with minimal consumption to speak of between oil changes using Brad Penn. Was going to sell it back in April but it runs so good I could not bring myself to list it for sale. (was going to look for a 993 targa) Clutch at 82k was only real expense.

150k w/no rebuild here. Regular 15w50 Mobil1 changes and not much else. Stupid SAI CEL started coming on every now and again. Was planning to do the flush, but I am past caring. Car runs absolutely flawlessly, especially at WOT which is all that matters, really.
