Every since I was a kid I wanted a Porsche. Since the days of the original 930 Turbo. Have always been a fan boy
.
Frankly I have always loved the 993 (964 and Boxster for that matter). My coworker had a mint midnight blue 993 C2S (20K miles) that he was willing to give me a sweet deal on but I chickened out. I have almost bought a Boxster S twice as well.
In terms of my me, I have a reasonably stable job in IT managment, no debt (sold my home at the peak), sold all my investments at the peak as well. No wife, no kids, no entanglements of any kind. Buying a 993 for cash for me would not be a big deal and would put a tiny dent in my savings.
I have a 90 VW Golf that I use for commuting most of the time and an Audi A3 S-Line. A few years ago I had bought a sedan and sold it when my engagement didnt work out.
I cant get this Porsche thing out of my head. Especially the 993. I never cared for the 996, the 997 is nice but the 993 has always done it for me. The 993 is the pinnacle of Porsche's style in my opinion. When you say Porsche this is what I see.
I always try to be practical and pragmatic and I know that a Porsche is not logical decision
. But I want it anyway. Desperately trying to convince myself that its not a smart thing to do. My women friends are saying I am going through a mid life crisis
. I told them I have liked Porsches long before I liked women
.
Give me a reason I shouldnt do it
! (I am teasing by the way but need that push
).

Similar situation...I waited and waited, putting it off. I was fortunate enough to get to drive my brother's beautiful Guard's red 964 on a couple of occasions. Came so close to ordering a Cayman S, but again, held off....finally pulled the trigger on a 97 993. Though it's only been a week, I am so pleased that I did my research and decided on the 993. It feels like a Porsche, it looks like a Porsche, it sounds like a Porsche and oh my how it drives like a Porsche. Can't stay out of it. As for reasons not to....they melted away as my confidence grew from research and info available through this web site. Don't delay..find the one that fits you .....now!

Tin,
I love guys like you, you come to a 993 forum to be talked out of buying a 993...
What you are really saying is "tell me it is okay to buy one."
Seriously, your only regret will be you didn't do it sooner.
Enjoy the hunt.

Oh, here is your reason...they are pieces of junk. I mean the driver and passenger side mirrors don't even line up...

Buy the damn thing. I bought my 964 last year at the age of 35. I had some extra cash lying around and figured lifes too short to not enjoy things you love. My wifes dad was a car guy. He was very successful with Xerox and always promised himself he would buy his fun toy car when he retired at 55. Well, he didn't make it. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor when he was 49 and died at 50. Seriously you guys, if you have the means then just do it! Life truly is too short.

I'd say go for a drive in one. If after that, you still have questions about what to do, you probably shouldn't buy one.
Of course, I feel just the same way about my prior 3.2 and the 3.0 I knew well before that. If you're a 911 guy, then the answer's obvious. If not, it's academic and irrelevant.
The only way I will ever not have a 993 (or earlier 911), is if I am temporarily between cars.

Don't buy one because a lot of people will tell you Porsche sucks now because of the Panamera and Cayenne...and VW.
But the modernization of Porsche is what makes the 993 a little more special.
Why do you want a 993? You like to tinker? Do you enjoy driving fast? Do you enjoy $250 oil changes twice a year? Why not a 997 GT3 RS?

So here are a couple of real reasons.
Valve guides and SAI repair will cost you 6k
Oil Changes are insanely expensive ($300)
Repairs/Parts in general are insanely expensive
AC Sucks
Steering wheel is ugly and does not adjust
You will never wipe the permagrin off you face after driving
You will spend too much time looking/admiring it
The slippery slope of potential "upgrades" is just that: very slippery and very steep
now go buy one and come back with pics....
