Default Alternator Shaft Nut

I’m in the process of replacing the fan, alternator, and AC belts.

Using the “factory” tool to hold the alternator shaft - I can’t get the nut to budge at all!

Some PB Blaster has been applied to the nut and exposed threads but hasn’t seemed to help. Should I whack the 24mm wrench with a hammer? I really don’t want to mess up my alternator shaft.

All suggestions from folks who have run into this problem would be much appreciated.

Yeah, you don't want to mess up that "Triple Square" 12 pt. on the end of the alt. shaft. Additional torque helps via a longer moment arm, in this case, a longer wrench. If you've got a piece of pipe that'll slip over the other end of your 24mm, that'll do it... or a big adjustable wrench with a longer handle than the one you're using. Getting more torque on the rt. angle 12 pt. will help, too. Slip a smaller piece of pipe over it as well. Pad with towels so that when it breaks loose, you don't smack your hands on something in the engine compartment. I would refrain from hitting the wrench with a hammer unless all else fails. Transmitting all that shock through the alt. shaft can't help it. Good Luck!

Howard,
PM your address and I'll send this out tomorrow. I made it in order to remove my alternator a year or two ago. This should allow you to grip the two wrenches and squeeze them together.

+1 on good advice .... further to the tip, wear heavy gloves and keep fingertips out of the 'Vee' - as the wrench handles become scissors once the nut lets go ...

Thanks Andreas! You have a PM. The penetrating lube has been on there for about 8 hours now. My Factory triple square is starting to show a bit of wear on the tooth edges from the torque - but the nut still no looser than this morning.

When I got the Tiptronic, I sent in my ManCard (as required) but I had no idea most of my upper body strength went with it!.

If the special wrench does'nt do it - then I'll start freezing / heating cycles. After that Punt!

Boobies!

I shortened a 10mm triple-square (XZN) bit, brazed it to a 13mm wrench, heated the handle, and gave it a few nifty bends to better fit between the fan and the rear sheetmetal. Then I removed excess steel around the end of the wrench for weight saving...

I think I'll put that one on my winter list. I wonder how well it would mig weld if I ground off the plating.

Barely? Yes. But they're still boobies.

I'm sure it would weld just fine. I cobbled this together before I purchased my Lincoln MIG.
