With more fuel and a Motec, you'll be very happy with the dyno. The sky is the limit when you can play with the ECU.

Which model of motec are you looking at ?

Please take photos of the harness you build, being able to swap back to OBDII will be nice!

+1 on the details, Which Motec? I am interested in your progress, I am looking down the barrel of the same setup.

Steven, in a 95 will you be able to keep the Motec in as it isn't OBDII ?

M600. I don't see any benefit of going with M800.

The plan for the harness is:

1. Get a used BMW E36 ECU for $50 -> tear it apart
2. Use the female 88-pin connector from the BMW ECU and solder the adapter loom onto it.
3. Install Motec plugs on the other end of adapter loom.

-> voila! I have an adapter loom that fits directly to the factory harness and to the Motec.

Fit the ecu socket into the side of a plastic box with a removeable lid, solder your wires onto the back and run the resulting loom through heat shrink & use a cable gland through a hole at the back to the box for strain relief.

That sounds slick! Please document the process here.

you bet, Here in Canada (alberta) we have no smog or other testing. I have a number of friends that even run Motec on later cars on the street.

I am looking at the M800 as I have a lead on one cheaper than an M600. I think there is great opportunity with Motec and our cars, especially when it comes to tuning for different fuel.

Nice idea and setup Juha, does the E36 ecu use the same type of plug as our cars? That is awesome, I was thinking of the same setup but was baukling at buying a 993 ecu and tearing it appart......

I am very interested in the outcome, keep the updates coming.....

So your going to use the stock harness with a jumper made from a E36 ECU. NICE!

We used to build all new mil. spec. wire harnesses for the Motec, so I felt it wasn't an option for a street car that had to be tested.

Thanks Colin! That was the plan. One of my best friends holds a masters degree in electronics and electrical engineering so he is the one making the loom for me.

Viggo, I will be in Stockholm on Friday; we will conduct the ice-going tests with the Waxholmsbolaget newbuild m/s Nämdö which we delivered mid December.
Wave at us if you see us on our way to break some ice!

The E36 uses the same 88-pin ecu that is on my Porsche ECU. However, I think 95's use the 55-pin ECU which can be found in earlier BMW's (maybe E36 M50 engine series, the 88-pin is for M52 engines).

I will keep you all posted!

Thanks for the info, I will check out my ECU...
