Go hug your 993 today
Or otherwise do something nice for it..............
Was vaguely looking at the 996 board as a couple of people I know are being bugged by the seemingly low cost of entry to a 911. Then stuff like this always pops up.

Wow, that really stinks.
What's amazing to me is that 996 prices are entering the 3.2 territory and knocking on the door of an SC - a car that at its youngest is now 26 years old.

Not only the ugly looks of the 996 but stories like these just make me cringe. Coming from someone who is looking for his first 911, the 996 just isn't even being considered.
Bring on a 993 C4S please...

As much as I actually do miss my '02 996 stories like this justify my decision to sell it. Now if I could just find a 996GT3 in as-new condition with low miles for <$50K....................

Porsche should be ashamed/embarrassed/liable for allowing this **** to go on in the first place. If you spend close to $100K for supposedly the best sports car in the world..a self destructing motor should be the least of your worries.

Exactly Sir Cactus. Some kind of disclosure of the failure rate would show some integrity also. My '02 had a replacement motor and it's sad that was a major selling feature on a 25000 mile car. Talking to local PCA members with 996s has also revealed that this IS a common problem. Yes, each generation of 911 has it's issues (I think valve guides are a weak spot of just about every gen. of air-cooled car), but they rarely led to full-on-can't-drive-it-anymore destruction. I think this brings the brand down more than the Cayenne ever could.

So... You buy a 996... Track the **** out of it... Try to blame a repair shop for the damages... PLEASE take responsibility for your actions... This is what is wrong with our society... I bought a 944 Turbo because of the reliability issues with the 996. I could have built a 996 for less than the 944...

Let's face it. At one time, Porsche was a unique small-volume maker of quality, lighter weight sports cars. Now, Porsche is just another high-volume car brand where the bottom line is to make cars as cheaply as possible. Quality and craftsmanship are not nearly so high on the list any longer.
The days of pride of workmanship, as in the 993 and previous iterations their of air-cooled cars, is over. Now, the manufacturer doesn't care if the car is made to last, only that it makes it through the warranty period.

Watch your rose colored glasses, the mid seventies 911s had some serious issues. Porsche spent the better part of two decades working past that.
I do have to agree with Tim that how the cars are built are more important than what style is built.

Are you kidding me!
About a year ago, I bought my teenage daughter a 2002 Toyota Highlander with 80k miles for $11K - she could of almost had a 996
