Thanks for the DMV Smog link. I was trying to figure out WHY I wasn't getting hit up for a smog test every other year. Only applicable to cars older than 4 years.

AND then there's the holy grail of having a 1975-or-earlier! Which is making life simple right now as I piddle around with a '73 targa. But at least it's a 73 1/2 CIS car........I can't even imagine trying to futz around with an MFI "S" that wasn't in 100% perfect form.

Schatz Motorsport...Mike Schatz, a real pro and a great source for things Porsche...he has a web site...he did some wrench work for me when he was at RedLine Automotive in Santa Monica, working for Pete Zimmerman.

Is that the magic year now,--pre-75? It seemed that it kept moving around. A 73-1/2 CIS would be reasonable to maintain!

When the CA Legislature initally passed the law (in '98 I believe) it grandfathered all cars '73 and earlier. It then went to a 30 year old rolling exemption (>= 30 years old are smog exempt). The law only made it a few years before they killed it so the rolling exemption ended with 1975 cars. Fortunately the cars already exempt got to keep the exemption. By the way, even the older cars are supposed to have all their original smog stuff, however since there is no bi-annual check it's hard to get caught.

4 years ago (in case things have changed), I had a readiness code issue on Rufus when I first received the car from out-of-state. I took the car to a smog referee station (a city college in Camarillo), where they can determine if the car is legal except for those codes. If so, they will exempt it, and give you the certificate. It turns out... by the time I got there the readiness codes were all set. Do not fret.

If your seller was out-of-state, how can you work out the California smog issues... he can't get one.

Just went through this. With a little direction from my friends it was a piece of cake.

Thanks to all concerned and I followed the advice of one of the threads by seeing the referee at Pierce College. Things have actually changed again in that the car still has to have the codes showing correct where in previous years this could be ignored as long as the tailpipe emissions were in compliance.
Anyway long story short after a really brief period driving the car it came up completely clean on all codes although in between I had purchased the correct code scanner which still sits in its packaging should anyone need to borrow it then just let me know.
Thanks for all the help on this one
