New to this forum...and searching my 1st 993.
Hey there.
I have been looking for a 993 for the last 5 months and I'm exhausted trying to find the right one. IMHO, the 993 is the one with soul. I've been speaking to Porsche aficionados, dealers, friends and porsche owners and anyone that seems have some story to tell. The more information I get the more the decision is harder for me.
I am very partial to the C2S 97-98, widebodies. I like black, silver with the cashmere or black interior. However, now a glacier white one is on the list. I would love if someone could post a white one here for me. The other is that I see that C4S are usually lower priced in comparison. Why?
The indecision is around who to trust in this market. Is there anyone that I should stay away from? I am in northeast PA. I realize now that a 12 year car needs a PPI by a very good and reputable mechanic but at some point you have to feel very comfortable with person you are purchasing from.
Here are some areas of contention that were brought up by dealers and others.
Is Automatic limited slip necessary? code 224. Or is just nice to have?
C4S, tires that wear in rear faster than normal. Is this true in comparison to C2s?
Re-sprayed front bumpers are an issue?
What's the difference in the "hollow" wheels? And are they really that important?
I know I may not find the exact car but it is all part of the hunt/fun. I just don't want to settle for something that I may regret later, I guess that is a risk with everything.
Thanks

Welcome to the madness...
Search for Victory, Schmidt
All 993s wear rear tires faster.
Bumper respray is no big deal if it is documented cosmetic and not crash damaged.
Hollow wheels are lighter - less rotating mass. Try to get OEM twists if you can.
White cars got the strongest engines from the factory, if you hear otherwise they're wrong.
Good luck w/ the search

Concur on the above list, plus Weissach, Craigslist, Yahoo & AOL motors, classified ads here.
There seem to be sort of 3 paths you can take:
- Private party and do your homework with PPI, incl. body inspection.
- Random dealer who got it on a trade in. Treat it like a private party.
- Trusted dealer such as Holt, Truspeed, Sloan, etc. You get piece of mind as they are very selective in their cars and have a good reputation, but you aren't likely to get a deal.
As far as settling, it is like dating. If you start off looking for triple black, is black/black/grey ok? You have to decide. Originally I wanted a Black/Grey 993, ended up with Blue/Cashmere and now that's really all I want again. But I might have to bend for the mix of availability, timing, trust in the source, etc.

I kind of lucked into my car when I was searching. Good price with good mileage. Basically bought it 1 day after the dealer got it. I knew there would be some issues with the car, and was ready to have them fixed. Everything is about normal for the mileage for what I have replaced so far. No big deal. Take your time until you find what you are looking for. One will pop up out of the blue.

This one listed today by a rennlister seems like a great deal.

I bought a 98 c2s a year ago for $46k with about 45k miles on the clock. But any depreciation was well worth the blasts down country lanes
