Default Daytime Running Lights - Help!

I had searched through the archives and found info on activating daytime running lights in a 993 to meet Canadian standards. I purchased the relay that was listed in the thread - the part just arrived and I went out to my car to plug it into R63 as per the instructions. To my disappointment, behind the plastic plate covering R63...there was just a blank hole!

Any other options to easily activate daytime running lights (fog lights). Also, I have the R63 Relay for sale

Steve,
My car has a relay patched in to use the fog/driving lights as DRL's ..... but here is an even simpler way to do that with a fused jumper on relay #31.

That is a very easy DIY, and I prefer to use the driving lights as DRL's anyway, for low beam zenon HID's or Litronics are wasted in that service IMHO.

Garth - thanks for the lead but it didn't work for me. In my setup, R31 is used for the right headlight. The previous owner added HID lights and maybe each light required its own relay??

I'm open to any other ideas on how to activate DRL. Must be lots of 992's that have had this added over the years.

Thanks,

I had this work done in Phoenix before bringing my car up north. I think it was $200. The mod required the running of new wires and the relay as the required wires are not in the US harnesses apparently. The shop said that they replicated the wiring per the factory wiring diagram. I wish I could give you more detail.

Nope, no relays or wiring changes outside the headlight housing.

Using the fogs sounds like a good idea--save wear and tear on the ballasts.

OK, I'm confused ... ..... regardless of HID's or not, the fogs are two H3 bulbs that draw enough amps to merit a relay - which in normally relay 31 .... so look about, and i'm sure you will find that relay: if it is not obvious, have someone switch the fogs on/off while you listen ( verify by touch) which relay 'clicks' .... & go from there.

Regardless, on a CE panel in front of me, the adjacent relay slot #32 is designated for DRL's .... and accepts a 5-pin relay vs the more common 4-pin types that populate the CE.
Check your new relay and the print out on the CE cover .... perhaps #32 is the correct slot, not the (absent) #63 ...

Jon - good to see you are still hanging about in the 993 section!
I was surprised that another 993 owner had R31 free since in 'our' car it is being used. I removed it and the right headlight went out.

Thanks - I'll check out R32 - my question is, do I just get a relay that will fit the R32 configuration and put it in and presto, DRL's? This is my first time doing anything under the hood so I'm not too clued in yet without the details.

Jon - since I know you will get an email on this reply, I though I'd post some pics of the car - I spent the day detailing it and it looks really great!

Re re relay #31 ..... all things being equal it is the fog light relay without exception: if, as you observed "I removed it and the right headlight went out", It may be possible that both went out?? Most driving or fog lights are interlocked to the headlight circuits when the headlights are switched on such that fogs only stay on when the low beams are switched on - and driving lights are only on with the high beams. The puprose of the jumper is to activate the fogs independant of the headlamp on/off switch and dimmer stalk.

Assure that the headlights are off .... then pull relay 31 and insert the jumper as described: upon switching the ignition key to 'run', the fogs should come on, and stay on as DRL's: headlamp operation should remain as normal.

PS: nice car!
