Default Help needed to install Hood Shocks

Hey "Renners"

I am a relative Newbee to my 993. I tried to fit new Hood Shocks yesterday, but after about an hour, I still could not get the ball socket removed from the bottom of the old Hood Shock! Any trick involved? I used to use a 10mm Open End Wrench on my Porsche 356, but this location in so hard to get at... special tool needed?

Please send me a link to get help, and many thanks in advance!!!

My wrench, who has been working on Porsches for 20+ years, said that was the toughest part of the 60k tune. I provided the hood shocks.

Its a PITA!!! I dont have patience for things of that nature.

Scott,

Thanks for the Link, I've printed it so I can scotch tape it nearby... and take the day off, actually every day is a day off for me as I'm retired (mostly).

But again "thanks", what a great group of people!

Cheers from "up here", Canada.

This is why I use my head to hold the hood open!

I keep a broomstick cut to the appropriate length in both of my work spaces....Keeps me from scabbing up my bald spot.

Here is the link to my article on hood strut replacement. Between it and the one at pcarworkshop, you should be able to sort this out. There are several types of retainers used over the years, including one that has a tiny pin that needs to be retracted before the ball socket can be released--very hard to see and hard to manipulate.

hello there. I just found this Hood Strut Replacement DIY. you might want to check that one out so you can be guided with the replacement. Though it's a little bit general, I think they have the same principle with that of the specific.

I just changed the ones in the 951 and low and behold I broke my windshield stupid!
the new shocks are extra stiff and longer than required. trying to install the bottom the hood opened more than it should and touched the windshield. you can use a vice grip to pinch the shock at the proper amount of opening to install...now I know.

Pcarworkshop, patience, small hands (which I don't have), and the magnetic retrieval tool are you friends here! It just takes the time to be patient....not a difficult job.

You just have to pry it off. I used a long screwdrive and wedged it against whatever is down there to pry off the bottom end.

IMHO, you DON'T need to partially loosten the spring clip as the DIYs tell you to. It's a spring clip for a reason. Press it on (using the same long screwdriver as above) and it snaps on.

Good luck!

Good luck!
winner!
i use a long / thin crows foot pry bar.
it takes more force to get off than you expect.

I've always been of the "long pry bar" school, too.

I've found the new hood shocks are so stiff you really only want to replace one at a time anyway. Do both and it may catch you on the chin as it pops open. Although less of a problem with the front than the rear. Do both shocks on the engine lid and you can use it to launch clay pigeons during your next target practice.

Just did them for the first time on a 993 turbo s, key tools....extended mirror (to see down there), long angled pick (to get the c-clip unclipped) and a flash light (to see) wouldn't recommend prying it off because this way is probably quicker and wouldn't hurt the car. Super easy, did it with my left arm in a sling haha..hope this helps
