Default 96 rear wheel bearing size, skf/timken part#?

All,

The rear wheel bearing I just pulled from my 96 C2 (SKF BAHB 636161A, sealed, metal shield) appears to measure 45mm ID, 85mm OD and 47mm W -- but the replacement bearing I received (SKF 305988D, sealed, no shield) is 42 x 80 x 42 -- which seems to be the same dimensions as the Timken 513180 a lot of online suppliers list for this application.

What gives? I can't find an SKF part number or dimensions that match my bearing on the SKF site. Thought maybe I had a 95 bearing or 97 bearing or Turbo bearing somehow, doesn't look like it. Closest match I found showed a cross reference to a BAHB 446420 SKF part number, but not much luck searching for that one...

Any help/information much appreciated. Just want to make sure I get the right bearing to get the car back on the road.

I've done both my rears, ordered OEM Porsche bearings through Sunset, and each time the package said SKF.

I never was confident enough to order via a product spec sheet. Plus, when I looked, the prices between a "comparable" product and OEM via Sunset was peanuts.

Hi Steve

I can contact our motorsports SKF rep tomorrow if you'd like.

Also, I can look up this part number in our SKF supplied catalogs to confirm sizes.

Hi Chris,

Thanks very much for the offer, but I spoke with SKF tech support this morning -- interesting story: they said OEM manufacturers often design parts to be "custom," so you need to get replacements from them. Turns out the BAHB 636161A I pulled from my 96 993 is still a valid part, now BAHB 636161C, but dimensions are 44.986mm ID -- (not the 45mm I measured) x 85mm OD x 47mm W.

If the parts supplier I used can't send me the SKF part or equivalent I need, will definitely go the p-car specialist or dealer route. Can't ride the CB900F in weather we're having here in NEast, so need to get the 993 off the jackstands!

Hate to pull up an old thread but wanted to supply more info.

I'm in the middle of doing my rear bearings right now and ordered the Timken 513180 based on local auto parts stores and online sources all saying the Timken 513180 was the correct bearing for my 95 993. I just pulled the bearing out of the box to attempt to put it on the rear hub and it appears as if the ID of the bearing is too small for the hub. My hub has been in my freezer for two days and the bearing at room temperature and it doesnt even appear to be close to fitting. Too small by about a half a mm minimum. The bearing came in a Timken box and says SKF 305988D. Has anyone used a Timken 513180 SKF 305988D with success? Am I just an idiot and need to try to press this bearing on that looks too small?

Just set the removed (old) ID bearing race on top of the new one. Not even close. Off by nearly 2mm total ID.

Pulled the OD bearing race off last night too. The Timken part is at least 2mm smaller in total diameter than the original.

For anyone doing their rear bearings on a 993 DO NOT ORDER a Timken 513180. it is the WRONG PART.
Not saying anything about Timken, In fact I like their products just that this bearing that every source on earth Including the Timken cross reference guide says is the correct part, in fact is not correct.
