That certainly is safer but on the issue of belt slippage, how would one know. You can still have slippage without hearing the belt squeal. Slippage means heat build-up and a short belt life.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I want to make sure no one is mislead here. I believe I have found the definitive answer from the mouth of said horse (the 993 factory workshop manual, section 13, "operating the measuring instrument"): "Read off measurement (tensioning value) at the point of intersection of the pointer with the upper scale (KG scale)." The manual goes on in the next page to state numbers in terms of scale increments, which I have to infer correspond to KG. Why Porsche couldn't just list the damn tension numbers in KG is beyond me.

Thanks for getting me to break open the factory manuals for the first time.

You're correct and those numbers make sense.

As for your last comment...exactly!

I'll bring this back from the dead to relay my experience from this afternoon--I had to cut off the outer pulley half. It was literally welded to the alternator shaft. (I didn't read through all four pages to see if anyone has had a similar experience.) So I'm backdated to 964 pieces for the moment, thankfully having 3 964 engines around to pick from.

I just replaced all 3 belts on my early 95. I ran into the same problem as Alex!
Not enough shims! The belts were on way too tight!
The PO had put 2 shims for the Fan Belt, and 2 shims for the Alternator Belt. That's not enough!
No wonder the old Alternator Belt was tearing itself in half!
I have to order extra shims for the updated Alternator pulley:-(
The A/C compressor is also hard to adjust. The back bracket (closest to the fan assembly) is restricting the ability to loosen the A/C belt any further. The whole compressor tends to tilt if you loosen it too much:-(

PITA!

I just did the pulley update today on my 97. The TSB was a little confusing where it says that the distance spacer is no longer needed (see arrow) and the arrow points only to the outside spacer. On my car, the belt lined up straight with both the outer and inner distance spacers removed. The new pulley halves seem to have the spacers "built in".

Be sure to order three new bolts for the fan pulley before starting the job. I had to tear two of mine up to get them off. I'll be glad when I have a project on this car that doesn't require a hammer and chisel....
