Default car jack

A ebay sale has this. My jack is shot. Does this look right? I thought the compressor went inside the spare tire.

Looks like a newer one, from a 996. Ours has a little cloth bag.

IMHO, those jack handles are a POS. Aluminum? Gimmee a break! They bend if you look at 'em.

What then, should I look to buy that I can carry around in the car? I've got a great shop jack for the garage but don't like riding around without one in the car.

Don't know why the factory jack (in good condition) isn't good enough just for a wheel swap

+1. The factory jack works fine in a pinch, as slow as it is.

pcarhombre,
you might call Porsche and ask them if they've changed the actual jack at all. That ebay one looks like its stored inside the spare, so its not a "993" original jack (which comes in a lime green bag that goes in front of the spare tire up near the bumper in the trunk), but from 10,000 ft it looks kinda similar... Could be same jack with different storage method. In a pinch, it will not matter as long as you can get it under the car to change the tire. Check the Porsche part #s or talk to the parts dept.

Hope that helps somewhat...

The jack in all NA 993s is 000.721.710.01. This jack is the one that leans over and looks like a y when it starts to articulate. Same jack also in 89-94 carerras, don't know about prior to that.

996 and 986 both use the same jack from the pic above - 996.721.211.00. It's more like a typical scissors jack off a toyota or something. I believe this jack came on the 993 Turbos as well, but I don't know why. Maybe a 993 turbo owner can verify.

The spare wheel is the same on all 993s but went to a 996 part number on 996s and 986s. I don't know if they are the same dimensions such that the insert would work for you.

I assume it would work fine if the nub that goes into the rail is the same wierd oval shape.

BLACK ICE, sorry to differ, but not all 993's use that jack. ALL widebodies, not just the Turbo, MUST use the scissors type because the other type won't clear the hips in the rear.

Sure, it's maybe good for a wheel swap. Problem is OEM jacks, including ours, are not meant for any sort of repeated use and WILL fail. That plus the oem jack is really unstable, and you have a recipe for disaster. A scissor jack is a HUGE improvement, but even they do fail after a few uses.

Throw away the factory jack!! Get a can of fix-a-flat and/or AAA.

For my Audi wagon I replaced the flimsy jack with a hydraulic scissors jack...will probably do the same for the P-car. And need to get some chocks as well....a flimsy factory scissors jack w/o chock is just an accident waiting to happen

I've got two stock 993 jacks (does not include tool kit... just the actual jack). $50 plus shipping for each.

The foam holder will not fit inside the spare tire, so if you buy this you would just wrap the jack inside some towel and place it inside the spare. The pictured jack is better than the one-sided jack that came standard with the 993 because I think the one-side jack wabbles and you risk dropping the car.
