Tire options vs price

I have PS2's and will probably have to replace the rears this year, and will stick with the PS2's until the fronts go...but are the Summi III's really that good? I still associate performance/quality with price. Not trying to be a buzz kill, but if the tires are THAT good, and if they are truly equivalent to the "certified" Porsche tires, what value does the "N" rating really provide. The "N" rating can't be marketing BS or hype...or can it?

I had the Kumho Ecstas on my 911SC Targa and they were really bad in light rain, slipped all over the place. I have the Sumi HTRIIIs on my 993, and I like them, but have not had them in wet. great value.
I do not track the 993. The 911SC saw a few DEs.
IMHO sumi HTR ZIII's are great bang for the buck, especially for DD/street cars. If you are tracking, you may want to go with something more like the Michelin Pilot Sports

IMHO the Sumis are as good at any price. I have them on 18" wheels with sport suspension on my 993. Ride feel, turn in, noise level, you name it and the perform well.
The only caveat to that is that I have not tracked them. Given the way they perform on the street, I'm very happy with the tires. Given their price, I'm thrilled.

I had the Kumho Ecstas on my old 968 at one time. Worst tire I ever had. I changed them long before the tread was gone, just to get rid of them.

Yes, The difference between the II's and the III's is like night and day. You should give the III's a try.
Check this thread out. I'm not alone on this...

While the III's are great tires, they are not the same as the PS2's. But for one set of PS2's you will almost get almost 3 whole sets of HTZ III's.
I ran the III's all last year, both DD & doing Auto-X. They worked great at both. Wore the rear down to the cords. This year I switched to the PS2's, they are just better in every way, except price. There quieter, better feel, better grip, & much better in the rain.
My reason for the switch was to be faster in the Auto-X, next year I'll get an even faster tire.

Thanks! You must be moving to Pilot Sport Cups, or Advan AD08's?

I'd really like to try the Sumis, but we don't have them over here..
Also the biggest size they come in is 295/30/18. I imagine if you want to track a TT you would want
315s in the back. Especially if you have a 2wd 993TT pushing 500hp, it makes a BIG difference,
even on the street I think.. Seems to be a great tire for the money though!

I'll offer another comment on this issue, which perhaps will cause some people to think I'm an *******, but so be it. I come from the old 911 world. Had a '68, '76, and '77 Carrera 3.0 before the 993. And the biggest difference I've noticed between old-911 owners and 993 owners is that the 993 crowd tends to feel a sense of pride in spending far more money than necessary on car-related things. There is a feeling that the most expensive product (tires, for example) is the best product, even though (to use the tire example again) people are spending twice as much money on a product that is only two percent better than its cheaper competitor. But by all means, spend $800 on a set of tires when you could be spending half that. If it makes you feel good.
