Default Hiding license plate in posts?????

I have noticed that posts of our cars have the license plates hidden or otherwise blurred. I was wondering why...we drive around all the time with our plates exposed...why the extra concern here on Rennlist?

Always wonder the same thing myself. Maybe high end car criminals with acres to DMV records target forums?

Default Monkey see monkey do . . .

Have noticed and wondered the same. Assume it makes us "feel" safe, but if one was to have access to computerized DMV records, a DB search function would be all a high end "on spec" car theif would need.

Most photoed club events don't do it when they publish event photos.

Gone in 60 seconds is the poster child boogie man of any high end car owner that loves / lusts for their car(s), instead of just seeing them as investments (with insurance value).

Well said. I never understood this either- both license plates are in full view when I'm driving, why go to all the trouble of blurring them in a picture? It's not like everyone has access to DMV records.

Paul.

Here in California, there's no need to worry about someone seeing your plate and then somehow accessing DMV to find personal info.

In 1989 I think it was, a young actress named Rebecca Schaffer who was on a TV series, was stalked and murdered by a deranged man who got her home address via the DMV. As a result, they passed a law to prohibit the public from accessing personal info from the DMV, so that information is no longer accessible in California.

I do not believe that is correct. Just spoke with the DMV last week about this subject. They said the information is a part of public record.

According to the California DMV Web site:
"Record Confidentiality

Most information in your driver license file is available to the public. Your residence address may only be viewed by authorized agencies. Your mailing address, if different from your residence, is less restricted.

Records on the physical or mental condition of a driver, however, remain confidential.

You may obtain a copy of your driving record at any DMV office for a fee and by providing valid identification."

You can find it here

Regardless, obscuring license plates in pictures may be information management, but seems silly to me. Why bother...

Oops, I should've been clearer in my response.

Yes, information about you is still available to the public via DMV. But as it pertains to folks seeing your license plate here on Rennlist or elsewhere and then somehow retrieving your home address via the DMV and coming to steal your car or some other nefarious act, that's not likely, is all. At least not here in California. The public is not allowed to get your home address from the DMV.

Here is NZ you can go into any Post office with $2.50 and ask for information about any licence plate. they will give you name and address! Sweet.
Get this though, for $9.20 you can walk down the street, pick a number plate from anyones car and go change that car into your name.
True storey. Hopefully this rule will change soon. But then again, everyone in NZ is honest, so why bother.

It's not public knowledge, so it would have to be some one "on the inside" & they can just search "Porsche" & get the same info. Hell some one can just follow you home as well.

I find our cars are "old" & don't hold much for the thief or scream "rich guy" like the newer ones. Hell just about any NON-Porsche person would think the 996 is "rich mans car" & we are the poor wannabe's.

^ ^ All that, plus obscuring license plates makes it harder to enjoy avatars like MurfysFlaw's, & entertaining threads like New License Plate, Vanity Plates, Post your Porsche Vanity Plates, & other Turbo Vanity Plates out there!

My next avatar will simply be my license plate; thanks for raising awareness about this.
