But really the only attention that I can appreciate is of knowledgeable people that can pronounce "PORSCHE" and know a little something about what they're looking at.

Why would someone know how to pronounce Porsche correctly? I still don't always say it right, but that's because I sometimes want to feel like a big fat American. =)

You know the only place I really felt like someone was jealous of the car was when I was picking up some parts from the dealer in Pasadena.

There were a couple around when I was growing up, none of them working though. So I have technically "seen" one.. just never "been"!

I never notice if my car gets any stares when I'm on the street . . . because I hardly ever notice if anyone is looking at me.

I too have people get really amazed when I tell them it is a 1995 911 (993) - they think its new!

I met a guy at my local Shell gas station who came in with a brand new Boxter S and comment on how much he loves 911's and how someday he wants to buy one. When I told him the year of my car and how much he could get one for nowadays he freaked out and said that he couldn't believe that he actually could have bought one with change to spare!

I dont get a whole lot of comments in the 993, of course I havent had it that long or drive it too often. Its better than the 996TT I had, everyone hated young guy in expensive car with obnoxious exhaust, wheels, lowered, etc... All thought I had family money/ its was daddy's which couldnt be further from the truth.

If you want attention you should try driving around my flat black "68 cad coupe deville, that is attention (good or bad)!

Yeah it has its advantages, I park it where ever I want because it would be quite difficult to tow being as the frame sits on the ground.

What was that Mister? This spot is for 30 minutes only or I will be towed? I'd like to see that, I will be back in a few hours..

I get a suprising number of comments here in Austin. Probably about 50% of the time when I'm pumping gas. Like others have mentioned, people can't believe it's a 97. It's amazing that the styling appears so current to people the don't know Porsches. The other comment I get almost every time, is that people just love the color. What really suprises me is that it's usually older people that ask about the car. I'd expect every 16-24 year old male to interested in it (and some are), but I don't think today's young adults grew up drooling over 911's like my generation did.

Not too many 993's around here like CA and places so I do get the occasional look and thumbs up or end up talking to someone at a gas station.
But the best for me was pulling up next to a guy with a serious trailer on his
F350. On the trailer was a beatufully customized drag bike. I think it was more of a show bike than a racer. It was really unique and beautiful. Way above the work of the Chopper guys on tv.

Anyway, pulled up next to him and he rolled down his window and aked me "is that one of those 993?". I said yes. He said "Looks like a million bucks." Thanked him with a big smile and the light turned green. Smile stayed on all the way home.

In these parts (90 miles north of NYC) people show appreciation at shows, cruise nights etc. When out
for a drive it's just another car, no looks, no thumbs up, nothing.

Ha!

This is so true... and many of us have already experienced 'this' "inquisitiveness" in one form or another.
(But *don't* get me started on the rice-burners or the 18yr-old in his daddy's bimmer! -- that's a whole different thread!)

Not two weekends back, I was on my way back from the airport (I'm taking helicopter lessons...), and I spotted a very new, very beautiful, navy-blue maserati at a stop light.

I pulled up slowly alongside, and looked over. The guy had already seen me in his mirrors and smiled back. I flicked the pass. window down - and he, seeing this, flicked down his own window. Before I could say anything, he said, "Hey! NICE COLOR!" I smiled and uttered "I was about to say the VERY SAME thing!" He then added, "Aaaaaah, yes, but which one is faster?!" I grinned and replied "Oh, jeebers, YOU of course! ..._this thing_ is over 13 years old!"

His jaw dropped.

G.
