Door Check Strap Repair

Door Check Strap Repair
Here are some photo's of my repair. I'm not sure the value of posting this because the search mechanism seems to be completely broken. However, for any of you who have the Check Strap problem you will find these pictures valuable. Even if you decide to just try a surface weld to repair I think these pictures will be valuable in that they clearly show where the metal fails.
* The first picture shows the post on the car with the fender removed.
* Second picture shows the inspection hole that was cut and the cracks that were found in the weld inside the post and in the thin metal on the back of the post.
* Third picture shows the bar stock that was welded inside the post to take some of the side tork off the strap as the door pulls open.
* Fourth picture shows the completed welds.
* Fifth picture shows the completed work that you can see after door and bumper were re-installed.
I have several more pictures of this if anyone is interested and would like more description.

Blackbear,
My repair included removing the left front fender and the left door. The ceramics were replaced in the oil cooler and air condenser. The front bumper and hood were both removed stripped and repainted.
I believe the total bill was about $1500 dollars. My guess is that just doing the door strap including fendor and door r&r would be about $1000.
There are definitely less expensive ways to complete the door strap repair I just didn't want to do it again and didn't want it to be visible.

Honestly, I don't remember if I the strap was replaced. I keep them well lubed with the white grease that you wipe on. Seems to keep them slippery and the rubber in good shape.

Thank you for posting the pictures. My door strap was welded twice before and it was a mess. I was told previous welds was done at too low of a temperature and thus failed even with a lot of material. I printed these pics off to show Rennwerke how I wanted it done a few months ago. It came out perfect.

One of the prior owners of my former 993tt had gone the cheap route. Albeit they did a clean job, I could never understand why on such a special car you would cut a corner to save a few bucks. And, this is in an area that you see every time you get in the car. Oh well.
