With oil consumption in those numbers...no way I'd go for a top end rebuild.
As Steve mentioned..Compression/Leakdown test first, then I'd invest a weekend doing the bass guitar root out method.
After you do the bass guitar root out, drive your car hard every day and try to minimize trips that take less than 15 minutes one way.

I would recommend that while the engine is apart the p/c are carefully checked for wear in all respects. The base gaskets need to be replaced so the cylinders need to come off anyway. As for the price,in my opinion the 6k estimate is realistic, its hard to imagine the 3.5 price could deliver the same end product..

Thanks all for some excellent info!!
And helmet155, thanks for that link! I think I'll try the guitar string method 1st. My car is frankly one of the best damn running 993s I've driven, and without big oil consumption, I am very, very reluctant to do a rebuild. I printed out Amfab/Andrew's excellent instructions and will give that a go before dropping the engine and getting involved in removing the heads...

Matt: I helped a friend two weekends ago do the bass guitar trick on his 97 993 and it worked well. In between bass guitar roto rooting we sprayed some PB Blaster into the ports, let it sit for 5, then rooted a bit...then repeat.
The PB Blaster worked very well, seemed to reduce the crust and make it more like clay so we were able to power through it without much worry the bass guitar string was going to break.
Then the fun part was flogging the machine hard post re-assembly

Thanks, helmet. That's good (and comforting) info. I assume the roto rooting is done from underneath - up into the ports from exhaust side while soaking with PB Blaster from the top?

We used techron from the top as in Amfab's instructions and PB Blaster from the bottom. Rooting from the underneath...
I think hitting it from both ways helped soften the carbon gunk up and also lube the bass guitar string a little too.

[QUOTE]Steve, I have a CEL with blocked SAI ports, so can't get past emissions testing[QUOTE]
Matt, I have the SAI CEL and have made it thru inspection the last 3 years. I bought an OBDII scanner and so far have managed to clear the codes and reset the parameters and get to the the inspection staition and pass. I am going about 125-150 miles before the light triggers
I have a 112K miles and go 1000-1500 miles per quart of oil. The longer the trips the less the consumption. It has been this way for the 8 years I have ownd the car.
good luck

What does the inspector actually inspect in regards to the SAI CEL? Is this a visual inspection to check if light is on or does the tail pipe emissions test discover the clog ports?

Generally, the CEL is the problem. All other things equal, if the car is sound it should pass the tail pipe emissions test even of the ports are clogged.
Be glad you have a 95

Matt, going back a bit further was my original post where I had the pictures of how I bent the string "tips"
https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...sai-flush.html
Also, I suggest wearing a long sleeved shirt and safety goggles when you do this, the goggles are so you dont get Techron in your eyes when you break through, and the long sleeve shirt is because as you are drilling and feeding the Bass string up the port the rotating bent bass string can flop around a bit and the outer sting windings can grab and pull the hair out of your arm which is a bit painful.

Thanks Andrew! I'll give it a try in the next few weeks when I get some time. I'm a little hesitant, as my tech says they are clogged really badly, but it sounds better than ponying up for a premature valve job....

In Connecticut, the inspector simply plugs in an OBD 2 reader.

Another 'thumbs-up' for Exotech - nsully drove his 993 there (from MD) to have the work done and was extremely pleased with everything.
Unfortunately, he totaled the car a week after getting it back home....

I had my top end done at 95k miles and have not burned a drop of oil in 15k miles. I took the car out of storage on Saturday and I'm amazed how well it performs and how solid the car is irrespective of it's age/mileage.
I contunually sing Mark's praises because he's a no-nonsense kind of guy. He charges by the hour rather than the job. He knows what he is doing and the reason he does it so inexpensively is two fold, he has low overhead so his hourly rate is on the lower side and he does this all the time and can get it done faster simply because of this vast experience. It's quite unusual to find someone like this I think.
