Default Leather color change risks?

I was going to just re-dye my light grey seats but I really dont like them. I already have the makings of a 2-tone with the black dash/wheel so Id like to re-dye my seats black and maybe the worn door panels.

anyone dye from a light color to a dark? risks? problems?

Ive read all the re-dye threads and they are mostly same color jobs. Im leaning towards Colorplus...anyone?

Risks: UUUMMMMM...
Screwing up a classic car and not being able to fix the problem
Not being able to get the dye out of your fingernails.

Spilling the dye on the carpet.
Color not coming out the same.
Not being able to sell the car because of the re-dye.
....and...screwing up a classic car.

Other than that - I think it's a great idea.

I would just sell yours and buy another one.

Seriously though - I know others may have had experience re-dying. Personally, I have not and wouldn't try it. I'd be interested to hear points of view here.

I'm in the process of dying my leather airbag from yellow to black, so far so good after cleaning & one coat. I'll post pics when I'm done.

It's as easy as painting.

What are you using - Surflex? or something else?

surflex is great and dying from light to dark is no problem. (the reverse is tougher). be sure to prep the leather, and put 2-3 light coats. the first coat will look lousy but by the time you finish it will look great. I even dyed a living room leather set with surflex from Colorplus and it (unforturnately) gets more butt time than my C4. although it doesn't get the heat / sun exposure of car seats, after a year the sofas still look brand new .

take your time and buy a very small amount of Surflex. a little goes a long way. and Colorplus is great to work with....

good luck

Can't comment on the dying process, but here is my 2-tone grey/black interior. I have the rest of the black interior but I rather like it now.

Default Leather Dye

Steath993,

How are you applying the dye? Spray?, foam brush?, bristle brush? If a brush, any streaks or lines from the brush uneveness?

Color uniformity? Any stitching clogged up with dye/paint?

Thanks.

Looks great, I think some black floor mats would make it look even better.

Surflex, preferably sprayed on. Airbrush works.

No worries on durability, it is as tough as the original color.

FWIW, the original color on these seats is on top of the leather. When you "re-dye" you are doing the same thing Porsche did.
You could strip the original color if you want to...

I like it....and I saw one RLister that had done that center door above the arm rest panel in black too which really set off the 2-tone. I already have the black mats, my only issues is the controls of the seats I think are grey plastic(will have to look tonight)

I'll post some pics today.

I am using a horse hair brush. I did 3 light coats, then some stitching touch ups. No streak lines at all, it looks OEM, really it's weird how well it turned out, you would never know it was yellow yesterday! My only problem was I got some on the badge, & messed up the badge a bit taking it off. I should have just popped off the badge.

I cleaned the leather, let it sit for a day, then applied a super thin coat, let it sit for 2hrs, then applied another coat, let it sit for 1hr, then did some touch ups. There were a couple of little areas around the stitching that didn't get fully coated. I used a model car brush to get all the stitching, you got to poke down in there to get the deeper stuff.
