Horn Contact support
Hi All,
Another question for anyone willing to help. My car horn goes off whenever the car is under hard braking. I have been told it may be the contact support for the horn going bad. Has anyone else experienced this problem and is this something I can fix myself?
Any input again, is greatly appreciated!!

Very common problem with our cars. The issue is the rubber gromets that wear down causing the horn to make contact and go off. There is a DIY but what people do is to cut a piece of rubber and "raise" the height of the worn out grommets so the horn only makes contact at th time you depress the horn pad.

FWIW, Al Zim in Texas stocks the '95 rubber grommets if you don't want to go the "el cheapo" way. Also, warning! Before removing the air bag, disconnect battery and don't mess with anything for at least 15-20 min. Always treat air bags like IED's....They're extremely lethal and can do some serious damage.

But more importantly, you can't replace the '95 frame with '96+ frame without buying a new airbag! So if you have a '95, you have to fix what ya got else buy an entire airbag & frame. I think somebody just filled their grommets in with some silicone RTV or somehting and somebody else managed to replace their '95 frame grommets with grommets from a '96. That doesn't seem possible to me, but...

I was in this predicament with a '95 and was told I would need to buy a '96 frame and airbag. The airbag was going to be $2000! I ordered the gromets from Zim's Autotechnik and they worked perfectly.

My car is a 96, so it looks like I won't run into the frame issue. But the rubber tubing methods sounds pretty good to me. I did a search looking for instructions on how to take the cover/airbag off and couldn't really find anything. So I was wondering about the following:
1. after disconnecting the battery, the wait for 15-20 minutes, is that just to let the capacitors discharge so I won't get an explosion on my hand? Beside waiting the time interval, is there anything else I need to watch for?
2. Doing a Google search on generic airbag removal, it seems like there should be 2 retaining screws from the underside, which if I take them off, the cover should release. Is that correct on the 993?
3. If all I'm doing is placing a rubber gormett/ring do I still need to disconnect the contact switch?
Thanks again for all you help!!

Since your car is a '96, don't monkey around with tubing or other spacers. They can keep the grommets stressed at all times, which accelerates the failure. I'd replace the grommets or just buy a new frame.

2. Yes, there are two screws, which on our cars are T30 Torx head bolts. If you turn the wheel 90 deg left or right, you can feel the hole from behind and even look into it if you can get your head down there.
