Horn Contact Issues
Have any of you had the rubber wear out that isolates the horn contacts? Mine just did and my horn would go off whenever I hit the breaks hard or turned hard. My wrench says he is starting to see a lot of this on 993's. He is fixing it by adding some silicone instead of buying a whole new bracket which are quite expensive....

Same thing happened to my 96. It was embarrassing when my neighbors were wondering what hell I was beeping for.
Anyway, I opened the horn cover and added couple of washers between the steering column and the horn push module (three screws). It gave me no problem any more. I did not take any pictures, but it was pretty straight forward job.

I had the same thing happen several months ago. As an added bonus, my turn signal module was failing. I took the wheel apart, replaced the turn signal module and used cut up sections of bicycle intertube to fix the horn problem. Not a difficult thing to do, but you do get a bit wary about making sure the battery has been disconnected for a while before you remove the airbag.

I had the same issues and was able to replace the rubber horn contacts. The 95 993 had a different bracket that holds the rubber horn contacts. This 95 bracket is no longer available but you can use the 96 horn bracket with one big disadvantage - you need to purchase a new air bag. I was quoted a price of nearly $2000 for the airbag.
I did a google search for the bracket part number and found a company in Texas called Zims Autotechnik (no affiliation) that has the rubber horn contacts. I called them up and they were very helpful and explained the difference between the 95 and 96 horn brackets. They also have the rubber horn contacts. However each rubber horn contact is $17.95 (kinda pricey!) but I got them and put them in. They work great.
A couple of quick tips about this problem:
1. If you replace the bracket or just the rubber horn contacts make sure you disconnect your battery and wait 20 to 30 minutes before going anywhere near the airbag.
2. If you disconnect your airbag, don't reconnect the battery and start the car. This will cause the airbag light to come on and it will never go off until you reset the computer. Ask me how I know.
