If I remove the SAI system...

Yep.
It only runs for a few seconds at startup and is dormant thereafter. Your OBD-I system does not care one whit whether the system is functional, or in place. The change is undetectable with a casual glance inside the engine compartment - the entire system lives in the dark recess behind the intake manifold.
It amounts to about 8 lbs. of silliness. I'm all for keeping my Dung Beetle original, but this was one mod I just had to make. The machined plugs from Patrick Motorsports are made for this and look like a stock piece of Porsche hardware.

The benefit to me was removing a handful of items that truly served no purpose with my ancient OBD-I car. Additionally, access to the oil pressure and temp sensors is greatly enhanced. Should I ever need to replace either, it's as easy as removing the airbox. Otherwise, the entire air pump assembly obscures these components.
It is a very clean removal, with no 'rigging' as suggested by someone the other day. That's not how I approach work on this car.
Here's my recent writeup: SAI removal.
Also, Simpsoap posted a similar thread last week, documenting his DIY success.

that was one reason I decided to do this. I had been doing service on the car, and after seeing Andreas' original thread, I thought what the heck. It was a little time consuming but besides that, it was a very easy DIY. The plugs from Patrick Motorsports work like a charm. Good luck with the DIY, let us know if you have questions.

Some parts waiting to be bead blasted, some parts that are cleaned and ready to go back in, and lovely zinc'd parts ready for installation.
Oh, and the tips are up for grabs.
