50k rebuild.... because, well, she deserves it!

Thought I'd share some pics of my beloved 993 under the knife. I wanted to get a couple oil leaks fixed while she is still under warranty, but then thought.... while I'm in there....
RMS seal
upper valve cover gaskets
timing chain gasket
power steering belt
new clutch disc (didn't really need it but the part was cheap)
Mobil 1 DELVAC gear oil flush
new rings (still within original tolerances but again, parts were cheap)
rebuilt and refinished heads with new bronze phosphorus valve guides (no need to worry about SAI problems now!)
a bunch of new gaskets.
new plug wires.
I'm sure there is a bunch of other stuff I'm missing too.
I was amazed to see the original cross-hatch marks on the cylinder walls. These engines are simply amazing. There were basically no signs of wear. My SAI ports were open but starting to build up carbon. The car used ~ 1 quart every 2k mi.
Can't wait to get her back!

If you want internal engine pictures, check out my DIY engine rebuild series of articles:
http://www.pcarworkshop.com/index.ph...out_the_series
One of the articles is on the SAI passages. They are pretty small diameter, did you mechanic ream them out larger? That is a typical preventive step.
I did much the same as you, but since my labor is free, I went right down to the crank. It turned out I did not need to, but I did not have very good service records on the car before that, so now I know what I have down to the last nut (including me!).
Did you replace the hydraulic lifters while you were in there? Often the O rings will go, and they are easy to replace since the rockers are off.
BTW, why doesn't you mechanic use the proper engine stand instead of a transmission jack? Its not usual to mount the block on a stand like that, unless he wanted to remount the flywheel early and needed access. I also noticed he has the oil feed line still in place, that is also unusual. Different techniques I guess, just curious.
Cheers,
Mike

Hi Mike - I haven't seen the SAI passages after cleaning and resurfacing. For now they are at the machine shop. The lifters are being checked and all new O rings are going in.
I think reason the engine was on the jack was that we were going over the flywheel where we could see some spots of discoloration (looked like little dimples), but the surface was very smooth and even. As far as the oil tube - who knows. This guy has probably done more 993 engines than anybody else in the area and he probably has his own favorite approach to rebuilds.

Now to the OP... Very cool. I love it when I see these cars not only taken care of, but being brought back to new! Good for you!!!

Hi Blaine
Nice job; is this Bill's shop?
If you did this at 50k, am I way overdue at my 90k?![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
We put the car on the dyno down at VIR last November. Engine looked good but needed a tune, so just had that done, along with a new steering rack and starter.
And a few other things.

Is this the same guy in New England who does the krazy cheap top-end rebuilds for like $3,500 for which people come from miles around, or am I thinking of someone else?
