Agree with Barney that the front end of the A6 cars were not very durable. However, I can say that I never had a single electrical or other problem with my B6 S4 car.

I have had a B5 A4, B6 A4, B6 S4 and now a B7 A4. For the past 12 years, Audis have been my daily drivers. They all have been flawless! So I'm surprised to see so many negative responses.

I also recommend looking into the B7 A4 2.0T with a chip in S-line guise. Same look and as fun as the S4, but lighter, and with great MPG.

Wow, I think you guys may have talked me out of it. While i do all my own work, the last thing I need is a labor intensive DD. Since I don't need 4wd, perhaps a better choice (though still expensive to maintain) is an E39 M5.

In the end, I'll probably keep driving my old E30 and go back to the 996TT plan

That's hilarious! Why on earth would Audi chose to equip the V8 with a timing belt if this is what's necessary to access it?

FWIW, I can change the timing belt/water pump on my old E30 in 2.5 hrs

I had a 2006 S4 for 20,000+ miles. Nice car with solid power. My complaints: rear leg room, overboosted steering at low speed, clutch very hard to operate smoothly, poor gas mileage and stiff ride. I experienced no uncheduled visits to the dealer.

Beware: The e39 M5s apparently have a carbon/SAI issue that is about a $5k fix. Maybe a nice e39 540 sport/manual? Plenty of power and a whole lot cheaper.

I had a B5 S4 too, it was totally reliable but there were many at the time that fried turbos. It didn't help my confidance in Audi quality

It's a B5 S4! No V8, just the 2.7t. You have no idea! The valve cover gaskets (common leak) took me 8 hours (did cam seals also)!





I had about $25k invested in it, that doesn't include the cost of the car. It takes a lot of "go-fast" parts to sort it all out.

my 05 A4 3.2 was perfect never a problem. My rs4 also perfect no problems and runs like hell, nothing but great experiences with audis

My A4 is a daily driver. I have replaced all 4 brakes and calipers, cruise control unit twice, turn signal switches and relays once, stereo head unit once and the computer display screen all under warrranty. I have had the car for 9 years and have not had many problems since the initial stuff ws taken care of. The car is so much fun to drive in the snow, is very luxurious, well equipped, and has one of the nicest interiors out there. It is a small car though. Very little leg room in the back.

I have had 2 B5 Audi A4's and spent some time working at an Audi dealer when I was in college. The high altitude Audi test team was located at our dealer and I got to drive the very 1st B5 S4. I must say they are excellent cars when they are under warranty but, I wouldn't even look at one other wise. I liked to refer to both of my cars as the 4 rings of dispair.

Between my wife and I, we have had 7 Audis - including my B5 S4 (that is the car that my 993 replaced).

We put many (and, in my case, many "enthusiastic") miles on all of them - they have all been absolutely bullet proof in every way.

I had a perfect time with my 2006 S4 for my 24,000 mile ownership.

I loved the seats for long trips. Back seat legroom is a joke if the driver is 6ft tall.

I do not know how people got sub 20mpg on the highway. I averaged 90mph on my 300 mile biweekly commute and still got close to 22mpg.

My wife wants me to pick up a RS4 for her to drive.

My car has been great. The only problem I ever had was a coil pack failed. Part was replaced and I had the car back in a few hours. Other than that it hasn't skipped a beat. It's not the most involving car to drive but it's a nice DD. I write off my gas so my average 17 mpg (mostly hwy) is a non-issue
