At some point in 2007 I was gathering parts to start this very mod, I still have a stockpile of Apepx joints, simply the best U-joint on the market.

Chris, they beat you to it. Your version could be the "WalROD" instead of the Golden Rod.

Yes, they are nice!
I have a couple and was going to make some with it but decided not to for a few reasons:
- Welding would melt the silicone boot and grease under it (yes, could use a pin to conn to rod)
- Existing dust boot protects the non-sealed joint well
- Cost over 2x as much
- This joint moves so little it could not be felt over the non-sealed

All of that said, I am still probably going use an Apex for mine... just because I am a mechanical parts geek at heart and just can't stand not to.
Is there such a thing as a parts geek?

You can weld to them, we do it all of the time. Just gotta keep the silicone boot cool. We weld to both ends of them without any troubles.

its been so long since I specified them, but I recall them being 5/8" (.625"). I will measure them at home later tonight.

ah, no... not the joints you have. Sorry, I meant the steering joints used in Swift car
They are larger.
