I instruct at about 10-12 DE events a year and, invariably, I have to ask at least one person at every event to please put a jackstand or two under their car while working on it (changing brake pads, checking oil leaks, etc.). Never trust your life or limbs to just a jack!

I always lay the wheels flat under the car.....old island habit...as soon as you take the wheel off, it's time to slip it under the car...

I agree that safety is of paramount importance while working under our cars. But - I think there is a massive quality (and thus safety) difference between the standard Harbor Freight/PepBoys/Craftsman stands and the AC Hydraulic version.

I purchased a set of AC stands from Steve three years ago and have used these stands many more times than my pea-brain can recount. They are scratched, gouged, stained, and generally abused. I feel completely and utterly safe when working under my junker. As such, I've probably spent 20+ hours under the car this winter alone.

They are bombproof.

I have always used jackstands and leave the jack in place if I can but you cannot always leave it on the side you are working on. I don't think my jack stands will fail but I do think that the car could slip off of them.

Therefore, I went and got the scissors lift from the group buy that we had going around Christmas to New Years. I think I may be the only one who bought one...

Mebbe tomorrow I will take a picture of it. Won't be a 993...my wifes SL500 needs a little time in the air.

Cheers!

I have a spare set of jackstands that I use to double up (even with AC stands). I can believe that people slide under a car with just a jack (have seen it at the track too).... Just asking for it!!

When I was a kid, growing up on a farm, we had a pit in our work shop. It was intended for use on tractors and farm trucks but it was great for my brother and I when we started driving and working on our cars. Wish I had one, now.

This thread serves as a good safety reminder to all. My wife lost her father two months before our wedding when his Corvette slid off some wheel ramps.

That surprises me about the ramps. I've always thought them to be safer then jack stands. Scissor and two post lifts are surely more safe than jack stands, but do we know of any accident statistics with them?

for the umpteenth time on Rennlist, I am asking (I must have Jack-Up-Car-On-All-Fours-Step-By-Step-Dyslexia), please....

share with us your specific steps on getting the car on all four stands. Including whether you use wheel chocks or not, emergency brake, etc. I would love to hear it again and maybe I can get it through my thick skull. Thank you!
